Cool ratcheting sound in the freeway

Hey wazz up ppl! new guy here saludos from chula vista california.

is normal to hear a ratcheting sound in the freeway? i have a POWERTRAX LOCK-RIGHT Locker

Ratcheting while going straight I take it? No, the only time you should hear it is when you're making a turn. If it's ratcheting all the time then the locker is shot; either worn out or the some of the internal pieces are missing. That ratcheting is the axle gear slipping past the cam gear; when torque is applied those two should lock together when everything is working properly.

Those lockers basically wont allow a side gear to turn slower than the ring gear. So in a turn it will push the outside tire faster (longer distance to roll) which is where the ratcheting sound comes from. When you apply force it will lock the halves together.

That said, 99Black is correct in that you should only hear that noise while making a turn under normal load.

I personally cannot see how you would be hearing that nosie in a straight line unless your rear tires are different size or one is very low on air.
