MAD MARKs 91 SR5 Pickup Rebuild
Hello. I bought this truck last week on Wednesday. It is currently the next week (6 days) and I have fixed $4237 worth of dealer prices to get the truck in running and inspection worthy condition. Below I will detail, albeit slighty, the process.
I bought the truck for a, what I though at the time, a reasonable price. After test driving and being told it needed only maybe front brakes to pass inspection I decided to jump the wagon and purchase it. It was late so I retired that night. The next day after work I decided to change oil and grease the drivetrain. The PO didnt know much about the truck so who knows when the oil was changed last. It needed it, badly.
Upon popping the hood and taking a closer look I noticed new heads on the truck along with about every new upper hose. Good thing. Decided to Seafoam the truck before changing the oil. Good thing, bad thing. Boy did the ole girl smoke, but I also found a new exhaust leak at the crossovers. Next day took it the dealer for an inspection. $4237 quote later I was told it was not going to pass.. haha
Took to Rockauto the next day to find out what the dealer said it needed rear wheel cylinder, front caliper, front brakes, parking brake fixed, rear brakes, wiper arm fixed, whole new exhaust and brake/fuel lines secured to the frame. Ordered my parts and $389 later I am in working/passable order. I changed the wheel cylinder, changed out the caliper, changed the brakes. I was able to take off all the parking brake components and wire wheel/brush them to new like condition. I reinstalled them with white lithium lube and everything works great. 10 clicks to max parking, although not within the 11-17 clicks still alright. A pair of pliers fixed the wiper arm. All new fit to install exhaust, nice, was put in. I also installed a new 02 sensor while at it since the old was corroded on the old exhaust, and also frayed horribly. No engine codes now.
The idle needed adjusted which I did no problem. The crossover leak was fixed by tightening all the 6 bolts holding it together. I am guessing they (whoever) forgot to tighten them after installing heads.
I need to borrow a timing light to make sure timing is in check. I also need to search about the radio in this truck. As far as I can tell it only has 1 rear speaker. There is a speaker in the passanger side door but its not hooked up as there is no wires going through to the door haha. There is a hole in the drivers door as well for a speaker but no wires. Its really odd. A white body, blue doors, red hood, and maroon tailgate. Frankentruck....
While under I saw that the rear dif breather was totally gunked up. Took that off and cleaned it thoroughly. Went to drain and change the rear dif oil. Took off the drain bolt nothing....then I stuck my finger in it and it felt like a big booger. Pulled my finger out with black/brown stuff on it, proceded with brown molasses pooling up on the garage floor because I thought it was empty. All this forum talk about the drain/fill plug being hard to take off. Took me 20 minutes. 5 minutes to wire brush/wheel it. 13 minutes to wait and drink SOCO and coke. And another 2 minutes to use the air gun to pop them off. 2.7 quarts later and good to go!
I have learned a lot about this truck and have various answers and knowledgey for people now. I need to fix 2 holes in my bed and am probably going to Monstaline it or whatever that stuff is called. I was impressed with it. I also need to research the stock colors because I think this is a custom color but cant be sure. Need some touch up stuff. Also need a new gas tank cover lid lock cylinder, guessing only dealer option? Where to buy cheap new front parking light covers?
Thanks to anyone who read all that. I will answers promptly and timely. Below is a picture the day (day 2 of owning the truck) I changed the oil and found the big whole in the muffler, all the start of which was my favorite inspection.
