Hi/Lo HID question

I have HID ballasts that used to have connected to to bulbs, but I didn't like the color. These were also only the low beam, on a 1984 4runner with Hella glass.

Can I order the HI/LO HID bulbs from
http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/HI...lacements-Pair

and just wire them up and have HI/LO?

I am assuming the HI/LO is triggered off the high beam socket that pulls the magnet and lifts the little shield.

Anybody know?

i would call them and ask if they know.. but im thinking that u would have to buy a set that was made for hi/low set up or u could just get the elfs to stay in the headlight area and lift the shield for you... haha

Only one two ways to have hi/lo.

a. do a retrofit and get a projector to fit into the headlights (either a drop in like Morimoto mini if it fits or some other projector and hack the hell out of the back of your light housings...speaking of which, you should get ones with clean non fluted lenses off ebay if you go that route), THEN you need a special harness to trigger the magnetic celenoids on the projectors. This is the preferred way of doing it so you don't have glare, it cost more and is way more involved time wise too. The Retrofit Source will have everything you need.

or, B. if you already have the ballasts you can just get h4 hid bulbs that are "motorized" ie: have a shield that turns to make em hi/lo and just put em in. i don't think you need a special harness for that, just the regular one with a relay and in line fuse that you should already be using in b/t the lights and main oem wireing. the glare and output will be terrible no matter what.

hope that helps. for more info i'd go to hidplanet.

I wouldnt waste the money on the hi/lo kit from ddm. The hi beam is a magnetic controlled sheild as stated above. All this does is redirect the same amount of light from the low beam, and really the redirection is not that good without projectors..

on my set up the "extra wire" shown above is what provides power to the magnetic shield

I should say, I am very pleased with ddm's product other than the hi/lo function

By all means, they are ton's brighter. I honestly don't see a change in brightness between hi/lo just the direction the light is being put out. However, I also don't feel that high's are needed with how bright the low beams are. I also run 2 7" hid off road light as well. So when I need brights, the off road lights come on.

Def worth the investement over incandesent's, but like I stated before, I don't feel the hi/lo upgrade for $20 is worth it

just my .02

There may be a differance between the kits we have, It looks like your ballast are from Hella? My whole kit is the ddm kit so I wonder if the hella's work a bit differant? Interesting

I mostly want the Hi's to be able to change the angle of the beams, might just be easier to either buy the whole kit.. or just put my HID's into the OG KC lights I have...

I see, Yes your kit is a little differant than mine. However I have no idea as to how the hi/lo differs.

The shield is the metal housing around the buld that you see in the pic on the page you poseted. You will notice it's seems to only be on the h4/h3 set up, since the others have a serperate bulb for the high beam. You can see this when ordering from ddm, there is not a hi/lo upgrade option for all bulb types. Looks like a nice kit all around though.

I would think that you could just wire up the hi/lo function for your harness with new bulbs, all it is, is a power and ground I believe, but I'm not a wiring type of guy. If you check out ddm's install intructions for the h4 setup you might be able to see what you would need to do to add those needed wires
