cam shaft end play measurement?

I got into my motor I am rebuilding (and a 12 pack) and I can not figure out where to measure the end play of the cam shaft. I am sure it is not between the front bearing cap and the thing that the sprocket bolts to(help me out here ,searched but couldnt find the name of the cocksucker)because that distance is about a 16th of an inch. But if it is the distance between the journal and the thing then the .003 gage doesnt fit. I only have a haynes right now ,and that may be the reason I am confused, but can anyone help me out here? This is my first build and I am trying to notice any thing now that will be helpful later.Should I disassemble everything and let the machine shop figure it out,or am I just missing something here.I dont see any reason why the distance would be smaller than spec if the key thing here is end play.Could the cam wander enough to cause this,or do I need to pry on the other end to measure?Any help would be appreciated.
