Well,

I just got back from a trip down to North Carolina in which i went to snag a 1995 Toyota 4Runner SR5. I paid $1700. It's fully loaded, power windows, power doors, power mirrors, a key fob, sunroof, 3VZE (blown headgasket, shocker lol). 31x10.5x15 KM2's full tread, 3rd gen wheels. 5spd manual, sony head unit, etc.

And this thing is CLEAN! It was originally from Miami Florida and the headgasket went at 254K and some change. I plan on rebuilding the engine, adding some go-fast goodies and using her as my daily driver. She's gonna need a cat as i see that the P.O. removed it, why, i do not know.

Nice find. Perfect truck for a 3.4 swap!

Take my advice. If you plan on rebuilding the 3.0. Dont even modify it. Header, intake, cam, whatever is on your mind about making this motor "fast" can be spent swapping the motor. The 3.4 swap is practically a bolt on now. If you want, i can get you links to a plug n play wiring harness, and a refabricated stock crossover.

I'd like to do a 3.4 swap but the funds don't permit it right now. I'm just going to build up the 3.0 i know it will never be fast and im not trying to make it fast i just want it to have a little more power over stock.

 

How do you guys feel about this clutch, it's the Aisin clutch from Trail-Gear for $185.

Ok guys,

I have a few concerns/ideas i'm going to throw out here.

Engine

I plan on rebuilding the engine and ordering and replacing the following;

pistons, rings, all gaskets, oil pump, bearings, timing belt and any other belts that need to be replaced, head bolts, clutch, flywheel, (possibly the master and slave cylinders), the exhaust will need a catalytic converter (probably going to go with a Magnaflow hi-flow cat unless anyone can suggest a better alternative), cold-air intake, headers (for the sole fact of keeping cylinders #5 & 6 cool.

I was going to order the engine stuff from engnbldr.com. I have read all good reviews on them and their stuff. Do they use sufficient headgaskets or should i go to someone else?

The clutch and clutch related goodies will be coming from Trail-gear as they seem to have fair prices and decently quick shipping.

I'm not sure on which set of headers to get, if someone can point me in the right direction that'd be great. I'd love to get a set of LC Engineering headers but i'm not sure that they are worth the $700+ then there are Doug Thorley headers that are also fairly expensive $606. I guess there are also Downey and NWOR but i can't seem to find any info on them at all.

As i dig into this engine, i will have a better grasp of what i do and don't need to replace.

Does anyone make a cam for the 3vze? I haven't been able to find much info.

I plan on having the heads and block sent away to a machine to have the block dipped in chemical to remove all imperfections and the heads sent to be leveled to ensure that there will be no more failed headgaskets.

Is there anything else i should replace while i'm in there? The fuel filter has recently been replaced so i don't have to worry about that.

Brakes

The rear drums are shot, i plan on replacing them with the Trail-Gear rear disc brake kit. That also means ill be upgrading to the 1" bore master cylinder. The rear discs means that i will lose my e-brake so i'll have to go to a transfercase brake.

As for the fronts, i'll be replacing the pads if they are worn down, and the discs will be replaced with a set of drilled rotors from R1 concepts.

Interior

The 4Runner already has a decent head unit so i will be hooking up my 2 12" Infinity Kappa series subs and 1250W amp, i'll have to grab a 1 farad capacitor as well. I'll put in some decent component speakers. The seats will be replaced with a set of heated seats out of a newer 4Runner or truck. I also have a Viper alarm that I will be installing in the 4Runner.

Suspension

The only thing i will be touching as far as suspension goes is replacing the shocks if they are worn out.

Exterior

I will try my best to remove the paint imperfections then i will re-spray clear coat to try to bring back the original shine.

These are my plans so far so i guess we'll see what happens! I know i'll have my work cut out for me.

As usual Ian, you are a huge help! I actually get a lot of caps from Miller Electric welders that are still good but they get replaced anyway when we change control boards or interconnects i wonder if they could be used... I wouldn't use them anyway but I could sell them cheap if anyone wanted to try. lol

 

actually, that sounds like a good idea. if you have any handy, post some pics of the label/writing and i can tell you if they're useful or not.

Brian I think with the cost of the full rebuild you can get a low mileage 3.4 to swap in and be just as reliable. As stated earlier, should be a direct bolt in with some changes in the harness/ecu.
