Ok here is the story:

My dad borrowed my truck that had been running great with no problems but had been sitting for a couple of months. He ran it down to the store the other day and it overheated on him (about 3/4 on the gauge) and he stopped right away. He then checked the radiator level and it was way-way low. He filled it up and let it cool back down and drove it back and it is now sitting.

What is the process I need to take in order to make sure everything is ok?

1 dont let dad drive it again.
2 check oil that u dont have water in it
3 check water in radiator
4 run truck and burp system to make sure all air is out.
5 drive truck and see if it goes hot again or runs good? might of not did any damage.

Im wondering if it was parked with low coolant or it leaked out over a period of time?

 

Buy yourself a coolant pressure test kit. Quickest & easiest way to check the health of your cooling system.

If the coolant was low, you might have hit the sensor with steam which is hotter than the water.

Step one is to crank the truck cold, fill the system as it warms up allowing it to burp. Allow the T stat to cycle at least twice in this process. Make sure the heater is on full so no air in there can later come out and cause you problems again.

Keep an eye on the temp gauge during this time.

If you get coolant back in the truck and all is well, dont quit there as there is more than likely a leak as the coolant system is a sealed system and if any is missing it had to escape somewhere.

Do not over look the Rad cap, if its bad it will push to the overflow bottle too early and leak through the bottles overflow.


And as said earlier, check the oil. I swear some people have more head gasket failures on the 22RE than they have flat tires.

 

Thanks for all the helpful knowledge...Turned out to be the T-Stat stuck closed and there was no water in the oil so hopefully that means there is no damage to the head (Thank the lord).
