I got a deal on a 2.7 5spd trans from a 95 taco. What model is this the trans and can I put a bellhousing on it and put it behind my 3.4 in my 99 4runner that's an auto? Thanks in advanced

It's a W59. Based on th application guide below from Marlin, I would say it is not compatible. 5VZ is a R150F

It's actually a good thing that the W-series is not compatible with the 3.4. With all that torque and increased weight 5th gear wouldn't stand a chance!!

In fact, I believe the W59 is underrated for the 3RZ. It's okay for the 2RZ, but look, even the Turbo 22R-TE used the R-series trans from the 3.4 and yet Toyota was willing to gamble the W59 with the 3RZ (which is more powerful than the aforementioned Turbo engine). The simple fact that the 2005+ 2TR 2.7 uses the R-series transmission is proof positive that the W-series was a bad choice for the 3RZ.

I've never thought much into this subject, but in the case a 3RZ owner wants to turbo, is there a replacement comparable to the R series? Maybe the 2TR trans? Doesn't sound like the W59 is up to the job.

 

The other way to look at this is that Toyota offered the Supercharger under warranty for the 3RZ in a 4100 pound 4Runner that I'm sure is rated to tow 2000+ pounds. So they obviously had some confidence in the W59, but even I don't pull hills in 5th gear with my lightweight 3RZ-powered 1981 Hilux when I've got the power because I simply don't trust my W56. I'll downshift to 4th every time, which is the strongest and coolest running gear in the trans.

I'm sure there are plenty of satisfied people with Supercharged 3RZ W59s, but I'm just saying I'd rather have the added insurance and assurance of a R-series transmission even without the Supercharger.

But you know, I'll keep rocking my W-series because I don't downshift it like it's my MR2, and I don't run 5th gear in the hills. That is how I'll keep my W alive for many years to come.

As for going with an R, fortunately for us 3RZ owners, the 2TR shares the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 3RZ block. So if you can find a 2005+ 4cyl Tacoma bellhousing, then you can run the R-series transmission. We actually offered a 3RZ R-series conversion bellhousing, but we discontinued it when Toyota released their version for obvious reasons.
