Advice on rear locker use
So, I was able to pick up a 99 Limited from my parents a few weeks back. It is in terrific shape overall, however I had a few issues with the 4wd getting "stuck" engaged, and the multi mode button on the side of the shifter not working. 2 new switches on the actuator and one corrected loose wire later and all is well again.
So... my question is: The Rear locker was NEVER used by my parents in the 9+ years they owned the rig (they were the 2nd owners). I am not too optimistic that it will work at all.
When I find a suitable place to try it out (dirt preferably), does anyone have any advice on things to try? I have read I think about turning in slow circles to try and "coax" it into working along with lining things up correctly. My fear too is that if I push the button on the dash, it will get "stuck" just like the 4wd did initially.
Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

Just go for a drive on the dirt, engage the AWD button and try driving, then letting off the gas and coasting, see if you can get it to engage/disengage that way. Also driving in slow circles, or slowly swerving left and right could help it engage. The rear locker I believe will only engage if you have the truck in 4hi or 4low.
Also, it's really easy, and a really good idea to change the front/rear diff fluid and transfer case fluid. Some fresh fluid could help the 4x4 system loosen up and work properly as well.

Follow the owner's manual for engaging the locker.
You can use a 9V battery and jumper the pinout to engage locker.
