What's the best all around tire?
Anyone have any recommendations for a good all around tire for the 3rd gen 4Runner? It's time to replace my stock ones (Dunlops), and was wondering what 4Runner owners were having good luck with. I mostly use the truck on road, but do occasionally take it off. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, John

I don't have a lot of experience with different tires, but I like the Bridgestone Dueler AT's I bought for my 97 Runner. They do well on the street and did well off-road the one time I took it off-road (combination of firm dirt, steep hills, ruts, 8" deep sand). I think they'll be good tires in the long run for the type of driving I do.
The best part was the price at Costco. I got 4 tires installed with lifetime balance/rotation/flat repair for $511.

John welcome to the board!
You'll probably get alot of different opinions on your question but from past discussions most people seem to like either the Bridgstone Duelers or BFG All terrain's. I personally run the BFG's and they are great IMO. Hope this helps.

I used to sell tires for Bridgestond/Firestone
my $.02
1-Michelin LTX AT ( I have these on my 4Runner now) they have a good tread for snow and light off road (deffinately not a hard core M/T tire)
2-Bridgestone Dueler AT. Good tire, 60k warrenty, smooth and a good tread block.
3-BFG AT KO. I had a set of A/T on my 94 Ranger 4X4 (before the KO model came out) and i was not impressed. They are good tire new, but once they wear down they have bad traction in wet weather.

I agree with Matt.
I had the stock RT/S and just replaced them with these:

The RT/S was a nice looking pretty quiet tire, but was horrible in the rain. THey would break loose all the time and hydroplain bigtime. I didn't know how bad there were until I replaced them with the above Bridgetone "HL" tire. They are one of the only few SUV tires that offer a 60k treadwear warranty right now, and are rated the best for rain traction, etc. They also has the "Uni T" in them. It lets different rubber compounds expose as the tire wears down and won't loose grip as it gets older. Tire-rack has them for $106 each right now - They normally sell for $140 a piece in the stores!
I go into much more detail on these tires here with more PICS:

These tires will last twice as long as the stock tires, won't slip in the rain, and will cost you about the same $.

I've used Bridgestone AT's and currently have BFG AT KO's. Both are excellent tires for everything but wet weather. Rear-end slips easily when the roads are slick w/either for me, so I have to be weary of my lead foot.. Level of road noise for either tire is very acceptable. Both seem to be good in light off-roading, mud/dirt/etc. Highway driving in either tire is great as well. The Bridgestones are more economical, but the BFG's definitely look more aggressive & have a higher treadwear rating.
My final comment for you is that the BFG's get a lot of rocks stuck in the tread that come flying out only at cruising speeds. At low speeds you get the constant tick of rocks stuck in your treads hitting the pavement on each tire revolution.
My two bits for ya.
