1999 4Runner SAS and Buildup - Project "BMF TOY"

Life is finally slowing down so maybe now I can get back into off-roading.

I originally planned for the last few years to start over with my 1995 4Runner that I use to wheel but after thinking it over and then this 99 popping up for sale I decided to start completely over. It also helped that the 95 was basically stripped anyways. I t would have cost more to buy the stuff to do a 3.4 just to get me where I'm at with the 99 also.

It's so sad to see the 95 look so hopeless. This truck was my first Toyota ever. I'm very very sad to see her go. Enough with the online memorial onto the fun stuff.

Now let me introduce you to the new victim. It's a 1999 3.4 sport edition, 5 speed.

My main goal with this 4Runner is to keep it LOW with 37" tires. I want it to be under 24" ground to frame.

Front Specs:
  • Diamond 9.5" Cruiser Third Front Housing - ~66" WMS to WMS
  • 32" Center to Center Spring Perches.
  • Aussie Locker
  • 30 spline Long Birfs
  • Custom Shafts
  • Tundra Calipers and Rotors
  • IFS Hub Body's
  • Custom leaf packs – using 48" and/or 51” Toyota Rear Leafs
  • Cryo-ed and heat treated 5.29's
  • 9.5” third
  • Frenched Datin Fab Front Hanger
  • Shackles through frame
  • FJ80 steering box
Rear Specs:
  • FJ80 E-locked Rear Axle
  • Datin Fab Front Hangers
  • Shackles through frame
  • F150 springs
  • 9.5” third
  • Cryo-ed 5.29's
Other Specs:
  • Dual T-cases – 2.28 front and rear - both 23 spline inputs
  • Triple Shifters – I want to keep my cup holders so I don't want anymore holes in the floorboard
  • Pitbull Rocker Radial Tires - 37x12.5x17
  • 17" x 8" Cragar Black Soft 8 Wheels
  • Custom Front and Rear Bumpers

I like your new Victim, also subscribed

My next door neighbor has a pile of 80 axles...he won't tell me how much he wants for a set..probably a good thing since my wife is getting sick of me stockpiling stuff

I am sure you have done your research for your triple shifter be sure to check out Rory's http://radesignsproducts.com/TripleSticks.aspx

Thanks for the link. I've talked to him. He's expecting to have more sometime in march. Only problem I may have is he says they don't work with forward shift cases. My front case will be a forward shift case so I'll see how it works out.

I'm a big 2nd gen fan but I have to agree 3rds are bad to the bone when they are kept low.

I ordered my tag the other day. It's going to say "BMF TOY". I'm sooo glad the tag lady didn't ask me what that meant. LOL!

I ordered a bunch of parts from Cruiser Outfitters the other day. I got everything needed to put my front and rear axle back together. Had C.O. ship the 5.29's off to Bobby for cryoing.

The plan for the weekend and next week is to install my duals. I figure it's best to do that first. That way I can point my pinions at the outputs.

So...what're you going to do with the old stuff? I'd take the suspension and front bumper off your hands if the price was right...or free. haha. Sounds like its going to be a sick build!

As low as I can get it. I'm going to think outside the box. I'm hoping with rotating the balls I can get some low (flat) arms made up by 4x4labs. That should help with up travel and clearance with the tierod and draglink. If I have to notch the frame for clearance I'm ok with that also.

The bumper, wheels, and lift are going on my brothers 96 4Runner. All of the stock 4x4 stuff will be for sale unless my bro wants anything.

Parts are finally getting here. I got all my axle rebuild stuff from CO the other day. Today I got a package from Bobby Long.

These are my 5.29 gears. Front has been heat treated and cryo-ed, the rear was just cryo-ed. You can see the heat marks on the front.

I also got Long's extra dowl pin kit and felt eliminators.

Heating the gears makes them softer. By doing the front it allows them to take more abuse and not break as now they're not as brittle.

If you do the rear and drive them on the street they will wear out within a few thousand miles.

Good to know. I had never done research on this kinda stuff before so i figured i would ask. What did it cost you(or cost normal people if you got a friend's price) to do these treatments on both sets? I will be going to 5.29's when i get a little extra cash to afford it. have to stick with 35's and 4.56's for now.

It's $45 per set and that includes return shipping. He charges the same amount whether you get both or just one. Bobby Long does the treatments. http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com/

I plan to also set my gears up a little different than most people do to make the thirds stronger.

How can you set them up different to make the diffs any stronger? can you explain?

and 45 a set isn't bad I was expecting more than that.

With the front you set the gears up deeper and the backlash lower. Basically you want the teeth to mess more and by setting them up tighter it keeps the deflection down.

If you're running IFS and the ADD system it wouldn't be a good idea to do it. If you also plan to drive around in 4WD a lot at speed (like in the snow) if may not be a good idea also.
