Well, I started a rebuild on my 3.4l, installed the first piston and torqued the rod caps to 25fp then 45fp and snap. I broke the second bolt I tried to torque down. I have never had this happen on a 22re. I was wondering if this was a common problem. Does anyone know if Toyota has just the bolt set like LCE or should I just get all new rods?

 

You may be overtorquing those bolts. Confirm the torque spec in the appropriate FSM:

I have the FSM. I am going by the book on this one, intstead of just throwing it together and see what happens!

 

Does your FSM jive with this or am I in totally the wrong place?

From the 95 FSM for the 5vz-fe:

INSTALL CONNECTING ROD CAPS

(a) Apply a light of engine oil on the threads and under the nuts of the connecting rod cap.
(b) Install and alternately tighten the nuts of the connecting rod cap in several passes.

Torque: 25 N·m (250 kgf·cm. 18 ft·lbf)

If anyone of the connecting rod cap nuts does not meet the torque specification. replace the cap nut.

(c) Mark the front of the connecting rod cap nut and bolt with paint.
(d) Retighten the connecting rod cap nuts 90 degrees as shown.
(e) Check that the painted mark is now at a 90 degree angle to the front.
(f) Check that the crankshaft turns smoothly.

 

Ooops, I goofed! Nevermind! I did over torque the bolts the main rod bearings are 45fp and 90, the rod bearings are 18fp and 90! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

 

Never, ever, work on motors after 14 hrs at work and no coffee to wake you up!
