auto trans flush

so my auto trans in my 5vzfe was shifting a bit rough so i checked my trans fluid and it was low, brown, and smelled burnt so i went to napa and bought a trans flush kit came with a new filter and gasket so i drained the trans pulled the pan and and replaced the filter and filled with 5 1/2 qts of trans fluid and seems to be shifting a lot smoother. when i checked the magnets on the bottom of the pan there seemed to be a bit of metal on them so i was just wondering if anyone knew what to look for to see if it will be okay. or if it is already toasted thanks in advance! btw my truck is the one in the sig

A coating of metallic paste is normal for the magnets, big pieces is not good. Just clean them off when you have the pan off and put them back where they were or look at the FSM for magnet positions.

Well running on "low, brown, and burnt" ATF is not a good thing, but some magnet paste is normal. Only time will tell how much life you took off the tranny by running burnt ATF.

Now perform a complete flush of 12+ qts when you have the time and $$$.

Right, that gets the TC, valve body, cooling lines... the whole tranny. A drain and fill only gets about half of the total ATF changed.

No, don't drop the pan again. You could just do another drain and fill after a few miles and get another half of it.

Well I dropped my Statistics elective and took Gas Power instead but I believe the 2nd D&F you would have about 75% of the ATF changed.

Some say you shouldn't even change it at all once you burn a good coating of varnish inside the tranny, so maybe just 1 or 2 D&F would be enough. That being said, I'd probably do a full flush myself. Confused yet?

Mt. Goat, now you have me confused.

I guess T. Boone didn't teach you that Gas Power class at OSU.

I've done full flushes on my transmissions for 15 years. Other than a regular filter change, I've never had to touch any of them for major service, even for the POS Ford used A4LD....

I wish it had been a semester of natural gas power or wind power by T Boone, it was a semester of using gases for propulsion, as in jet or rocket propulsion. Yeah I studied a little rocket science.

Your experience is comforting to those of us that keep the ATF nice and fresh. Hope I have the same results, I also have a Fix Or Replace Daily (FORD) 95 Taurus.

I have little faith that doing a 12-qt flush using the cooler lines is changing more than 50% of the transmission fluid. There are many places in the valve body and a large majority of the torque converter that simply aren't exchanging fluid very quickly, if at all.
