Fresh rebuilt 22re. NEED HELP!

i just rebuilt my 1987 22re with kit from engnbldr and his street rv head and 268c cam. it cranks good and fires up perfect but dies after just 2-5 seconds of running. it seems likes its getting either too much or not enough gas. if i try to press the gas it dies instantly.

a couple things that i noticed might cause an issue are, when i turn it off and take the key out the check engine light comes on sort of dim and the fan is still able to go on.

any help is appreciated. if i dont get it going in the next 5 hours i have to go another 2 weeks without my truck. thanks!

haha i hope so. im leaning towards a problem with the fuel system. it cranks and runs great off the cold start but then dies when that runs out. or maybe a bad vacuum leak?

someone on here just recently had this problem as well. Also on a rebuilt engine I think. Might wanna search around and find that thread. I don't know if he ever figured it out though.

as hilandfrog had mention those sensors are a good place to start. Double check to make sure you had all the injector wires correct as well and are connected securely and not crossed up as well as the plug wires correct. Meaning don't just look at them or wiggle them around, unhook and rehook them.

Double check your distributor is not a tooth of as well as your cam timing.

Even with a bad ground the engine will still run if your able to start it. As the grounds will affect the efficiency of your starter etc etc. It might not run well but it should at least sit and idle. "The big 3" in unnecessary as it will not solve your issue.

To me it sounds more like a vacuum leak. Maybe from some misplaced vacuum lines. Check your vac drawings and ensure all of your vac line are correct as well.

XXXtreme...

I had mentioned the big three because of the fan and lights staying on, even faintly??
Is there a way a + wire is where a - wire should be w/o popping all the fuses?

Seems odd to have power to the fan after the key is out.

i went over the vacuum lines, inj. wires and spark plug wires again. thay're all right. timing chain is definitly right, tried distributor a tooth in both directions, and then reset it to tdc and got it back to where it was. i will check the afm now but im a little cinfused on how to check the tps. a simplified version of the process would help me out.

as for the weird light and fan issue, i have no idea. hopefully thats something minor that i can figure out after i get it running and not a cause or other side effect of the problem.

4wheel crawler has the easiest TPS adjustment procedures.... IMHO

The FSM has the specs for AFM

fuel pump is good. it seems like its just running off the cold start and the after that runs out it stalls, because it sounds great for about 4-5 seconds. is there anything else i can check to see why she wont stay running? it only had a blown head gasket before the rebuild so its stange that something went bad between when i took the motor out and when i dropped it back in. is there a step that im missing? computer reset or something?

the fuel pump will run to start the engine without the afm switching it on after its started the afm must be working for the fuel pump to continue working so the fact it starts dose not necessarily mean that the fuel pump is continuing to run after it starts.

right. i tested the afm with a meter and tested the fuel pump by jumping the terminals in the diag box. so i know the fuel pump isnt bad, it just may not be getting the signal to keep pumpin dat fuel

how long does the cold start stay on for? i read that it goes untill the water temp sensor shuts it down. which i dont think would happen in 5 or 10 seconds. am i wrong thinking that its running off the cold start and the stalling when that runs out?

i think i got it figured out. i forgot to hook up the fuel injector ground wire. bolted it on and the check engine light went out and i cant operate the blower when the ign is off anymore. gotta charge the battery up and try it.

Check for grounds. There is one that sometimes gets missed that goes to the intake. Make SURE afm has a good clean plug in.
