Need buying advice

i am looking into a first generation 4runner...seems like i am finding 3.0's more than anything...i want a reliable ride to i am wondering, would you guys hold out for one with a 22re or just get a 3.0 with the knowing that you will plan a 3.4 conversion?

my plans for the truck is more of an expo vehicle than a hardcore rockcrawler...i would straight axle it, install a doubler 35-37'' max tire size...i want something i can take the family on a trip and drive the freeways happily...

your input is appreciated...thanks...

btw...it seems pretty easy to find 3.0's for cheaper than the 22re.

My next project will likely be a 1st gen 3.0 to 3.4 conversion, time and money allowing. I love my 2nd gen 3.4 swap.

The '88-'89 3vzes were/are less prone to issues with the HGs due to the use of Asbestos in them. It was banned in '89 so Toyota had to quickly make a new HG design that didnt use it, hence why the '90-95 3vzes were terrible about it.
They arent without their issues though, like any 20+ year old vehicle. Personally, I would get one over the 22re if you are wanting to go with 35"+ tires and be able to haul family. That extra 20-30 HP 3vzes put out at the wheels will help
