Headgasket replacement, what else should I do?

So I need a head gasket, my first question is what kind should I get?
This is on a 1990 22RE Pickup

I don't want a felpro gasket.

I have thought about just going back to a Toyota gasket but I want to know if there are any better?
If you list one please list a link to a site I can get it from, thank you.
Do I need new head bolts for this job? Some things I've read say yes some say no.

Should I have my injectors rebuilt while they are out?

While I'm in there I plan on putting in steel timing chain guides, the ones in there are plastic and NOT BROKEN. I want steel ones so I don't have much to worry about them later. Should I replace my water and oil pump? or just put new seals in while its apart?

I'm also planning on doing a EGR delete while its apart. I don't have emissions to worry about where I live. Are there any other things I could/should remove while I'm there?


I think thats all the questions I have for now. I don't plan on starting the actual work until April or May due to bad weather and no heat in my garage. But I want as many facts as I can get now before I start.

The best head gasket is an oem toyota head gasket, you can reuse the head bolts. you can send the injectors out to be cleaned if you want. It would be a good idea to replace the water pump, and if the oil pump has a lot of miles on it, consider replacing it also.

get the head cleaned, check the block surface for true-ness, while the head is getting cleaned have them go through it and see if any valves need to be replaced or if needs to be surfaced.

check the oil pump, replace timing chain and guides if it hasn't been done within the past like 90,000 miles.

If you blew a head gasket, I would tear down the motor enough to get the coolant out of the cylinders and drain the oil. Don't want to leave any water in there to rust things out. After getting all the water out, I would spray things down with WD-40 to prevent further rust until you can put things back together.

^^^ this is good advise. Can't go wrong with the toyota oem gasket.

I should mention that the water in my oil was found by sending a sample to Blackstone labs, they called me and told me what my problem was and that it was very minor as of that sample, and fix as soon as possible. I will be parking it until I work on it as my parents are going to let me drive their 4x4 if the weather is bad.

The timing chain and guides around 60,000 miles ago, before I got the truck, so I should be OK there, I had my valve cover off today to inspect everything and it all looked good in the front.

In the full gasket set from engnbldr.com. what all is in that, is it a one stop shop for gaskets?

yep....was a complete gasket set near as I can recall. no crush washers there for the fuel lines, hence, the local dealer purchases.

Jerry watsontown is out towards williamsport, like less than an hour and a half away. At least from me. Probably closer for you since your closer to I80.

I'm half an hour south of Williamsport.
I think I'll start with ordering that set and head bolts and go from there.
Luckily when I'm doing this my nextdoor neighbor is a mechanic and his father is a machinist, so I have someone I trust to check the head

Its pretty much a striaght shot out I80 from berwick. Get off at the I180 for Williamsport then get off at watsontowns and boom. your in the middle of nowhere, lol.

dose the engnbldr gasket set include a head gasket?

yes, the kit includes the gasket as well. If you want the kit without the gasket give him a call up he will work a price for ya.

I am running his full rebuild kit on mine and no issues, but some have been having problems with the rock brand headgasket that comes with his kit. I haven't though. AT least not for the past 7000 or so miles.

if you do like i did, i did the top and front with head gasket / and all the other goodies. shipping was reasonable.....tell him what you are doing, tell him what you want and he can tell you what you need.

Sounds like fun! haha. If any of your guys have a heated garage we can do it this month! haha

But I think I'll be getting that gasket set from engnbldr and new head bolts. from the looks of it that should be all I need. Then I just have to make EGR delete plates and I'll be set.
I am going to attempt to do this without pulling the oil pan, because from the looks of it nothing is broken and my oil is still clean(unlike 92s truck)
