search the "front end kit" from engnbldr....I believe it's the timing cover / chain / metal guides / oil and water pumps

 

Personally I would fore go the other things that dont require removing the head again.

I would get the head rebuilt with a nice valve job and get a Toyota HG. Also a TRD or LC cam and throw in some ARP studs.

Save the other things for another time.

 

don't ask me cost wise, cost me probably close to the $1800 mark altogether including the small stuff.

 

Heck though if your having a party, rebuild the whole shebang.

 

im in the middle of doing this project also and when i took my T chain off there wasnt any links that were a different color to line up with the dimples on the sprocket. i ziptied the chain on the cam sprocket so that it stayed on the right link so i am wondering if anybody has one layin around that they could count the links from the top link on the cam to the bottom link on the crank... count the links on the driver and passenger sides of the chain...i think its one gold link up top and two on the bottom...i would appreciate it a lot cuz its still a good chain i dont want to buy a new one. it's on an 87 22r im sure they're all the same though.

also its a double wide chain and it rubbed a hole in the metal piece right under the oil fill cap i didnt know if thats bcuz its a wide one or the camshaft moved forward somehow...my last truck had a single wide chain on it and it never rubbed on that piece.

 

haha I shouldn't speak for Lumpy, but out of the 4 of us that would be there, I think I'd be the only one that has ever had the bottom end of a 22r series motor apart. Twice. (same motor). Don't ask. lol.

 

If I'm gonna rebuild the engine Im gonna just buy a used block rebuild it and stick it in then sell my old block. lol. That way I can save time and keep driving it, lol.

Maybe I'll go diesel. haha, I might as well go all the way to awesome if I'm going that far. You can't beat diesel!

 

Ok so I keep thinking about doing this job, and I was wondering if I should use permatex copper spray gasket when I put my new head gasket on?
Will that provide better seal? is it worth doing? I know its good stuff I've used it on exhaust flanges before, and it says its good for head gaskets.
So just wondering

 

Best thing you can do for head gasket is torque about 1/8th turn past recommended.

I also loaded up all the head bolt holes with PB Blaster & left for a day before blowing it out with an air compressor & chasing the threads all the way down TWICE. I also torqued the heads to thru the 1st 1/4 turn, then backed them all the way off & retorqued in the correct sequence. This was based on advice from Engine Builder

My advice is much like the others...Follow the Rabbit for the torque sequence, very important.

It's not a bad job at all (3 times now) I'd get a cam as well the 268 is nice that's what I'm running but I don't run in the high R's so I'm going to replace next year with a 261. I'm also running the Street R/V head made a bit of difference as well.

Now for you...The complete kit from Engnbldr is good. You'll have all the gaskets aside from the fuel line ones. I'd also change the fuel filter while your in there. If you do the oil and water pump, do yourself a favor and drop the pan and clean that out as well.

Do not put anything on the H/G when installing it. Nice and clean is all you want. Even on the paper gaskets I didn't use anything. Just a wee bit on the timing cover gasket where specified.

The Rock gasket kit has the exhaust gaskets and doughnuts the felpro does not.

Here is another thread if you like to read. Mind you I had other issues at play here as well. I think the 2nd h/g was due to a loose head bolt so keep an eye on them...
