hello all

i've been reading around on lifts and i think i've figured out the best approach in terms of my needs/budget but it would be nice to get some feedback.

the truck is a stock 92' on totally stock suspension and 31s. front suspension is in good shape but i need new shocks. the rear shocks are also tired and the leafs are showing the typical sag. i want to switch to 33s but i don't want a body lift.

the truck sees lots of offroad time but no crawling. it also sees lots of work (heavy loads and what not).

here's what i'm thinking:

1.5" ball joint spacers with differential and sway bar drop
OME leafs in the rear (medium duty 43")
KYB shocks all around

questions/concerns:

1- i want to stay as stock and reliable as possible, am i going about this all wrong (i.e. is there an option that would be more reliable/durable)?
2- any recommendable alternatives to the OMEs?
3- recommendable vendors/shops? i want to order online (i'm in indiana, there's nothing around here!)

whats wrong with body lifts, ive put pretty heavy loads in the box with the body lift way past its rated capacity and the box didnt tweak out of shape. the body lift only costs 130 bucks. im also going thru the balljoint route, bought them thru 4crawler for 100 bucks

If your truck see's a lot of heavy loads and stop and go, I would consider gearing if you are going to 33's. I think the bj spacers some fender trimming and a leaf or 2 more in the back would get some 33's under you.

i read DeathCougars' thread (i'm subscribed) and i checked out the links to the kits but didn't find what i was looking for.

i didn't realize i *had* to post there (it says read first not 'only post here'). i started my own because i'm an egocentric maniac and i want people to address my needs (i never learned to share).

i'd read about 33x10.50's with stock suspension but i want the extra lift. i really like the idea of zuk coils but for the money it seems like a better option to get all new leafs (bushings, etc). and get the longer shocks. or were you recommending that mod for another reason?

I have basically this combo right now but opted to skip the diff and swaybar drops because I wanted an IFS brace and more flexibility. Still rockin' the 31s as well. I have the BJ spacers, OME med duty leafs, and OME shocks, removed the swaybar - truck rides better than before. eventually planning on running some sort of 33" tire to match the 4.88s I have but here's a pic so you can get an idea of what the lift looks like with 31s:

 

well, you said you haul heavy loads.

so a set of 12" 125# coils in the rear (ZUK mod) will help with the weight (or a set of 14" 125# coils...up to you).

uhm, put new bushings in your springs????

pick up a set of longer shocks all around.

BJ spacers from 4crawler up front.

my truck also gets used as a truck and hauls heavy loads on occasion - that's how i broke in my OMEs quicker the medium duty leafs seem to haul my loads just fine (around 1000lbs maybe a little more). had I known about the Zuk mod previous to my decision, I would probably have done so because I'm a cheap-ass and it might flex better(?). the OME stuff isn't cheap either - i think i paid shy of $1k for my susp items after shipping/tax.

if you decide to go with new leafs, you'll definitely want some new bushings for them and don't forget to remove the sleeve from your old ones because the new kit most likely won't have it. new ubolts are also recommended whenever you start messing with the almost 20yr old ones.

 

back to square one on all of this - the more i read, the more confusing everything gets, particularly because i am thinking of potential / future mods and there's too many variables to move forward without having to possibly revert the changes. the real rub is that i'm still not sure if i want to go with a 5vz-fe swap or if i want to continue to save up for a 1KZ (turbo diesel) in place of my 3VZE. will think on this some more, thanks all

 

you'll have more room in the engine compartment with a body lift (if you're doing an engine swap), and the frame on these trucks is so high into the body that a 1-2" body lift won't stick out like a sore thumb

make it simple, bj spacers and shackles or aal. talk to wabbit and he will help you.
