OK I tried asking this on *another* board, but the folks who answer have this habit of not reading the question and answering questions that weren't asked. I'm hoping the IQ level is higher over here.

That said - how long should it take for the engine oil light on the dash to go off after an oil change (oil drain and refill + new filter) on the first start? This is on a 3.4L V6. On my 2.7L it only takes a second. On the 3.4 it took 3-5 seconds or so. After that first start, it goes off w/in 1 second. Oil level is good, no leaks, no tailpipe smoke.

The useless replies I got were:

1. Fill the filter - Uhm hard to do when it's hanging upside down on the V6 block.

2. The oil light isn't a "time to change the oil light" Well NO SH#T! I didn't ASK that. uGh.

i think mine usually takes 2 or 3 seconds...but i dont think 5 seconds would mean it's bad or anything..as long as it goes off i would think it's a good thing..right???

 

The 3-5 seconds sounds normal for the initial startup after you change the oil and filter. ON subsequent startups the light should go out after a second.

The reason the light stays on longer after an oil change is because the oil filter needs to refill with oil before the engine can attain the proper oil pressure. While this is happening the engine oil pressure is lower than the oil pressure sensor wants, so it holds the light on. To my knowledge, there is no way to 'pre-fill' the oil filter on a 3.4L since it angles down toward the block.

2-3 seconds would be typical but as long as it goes off then nothing to worry about!

From the sounds of it - looks like everyone's talking about how all the warning lights kind of go on when you have the key in the on position with the engine off.
