auto or 5 speed? fuel filter, tranny service, spark plugs and timing check, air cleaner? condition of all there will help figure out the problem.

sounds like it might be a transmission problem. check and see what your fluid level is and see what color it is.

if it is not pumping the fluid right it would cause it to not give all the power to the tranny and this in turn will make u need more gas to keep it going at that speed and when u let off drag and slow quick. mine was acting like this and i changed filter on tranny and fluid and it made a big difference.

now have u checked the bearings? lift it off the ground and turn wheels see if u have a lot of drag on one tire vs another,

also before u changed the pump did u have a problem with ur reverse? when i put it in reverse it goes but when i hit the gas real slighty. if i backing my truck up from the gutter on my street i cant even get on to the sidewalk unless i either get momentum or i lock in my 4wd locking hubs

i didnt have the problem with reverse. if u hit the gas in rev. does the motor rpms go up but the 4runner didnt move much? it could be a torch converter going bad too, but that usually affects all gears, the only thing i could think is your clutch plates are going bad and its time for a tranny rebuild, but i would do a tranny service and add tranns medic to see if that helps. but i will warn you that it could make it worse just fyi about it.

I had a similar problem Make sure none of your brakes are sticking, Torque converter should unlock when you let off of the gas, check and clean all the electrical connections to the trans. Hope this helps.
