I took my 1997 V6 Runner SR5 in for a 180K service and a timing belt replacement, fuel filter, and water pump replacement.

In the morning the car will start up fine and idle at about 700 RPM after it warms up.
However, after driving it for a while, when I try starting it up, it starts up fine for a few seconds and then stalls out. I can gas it a bit to hold the RPM for a few seconds and the car will no longer stall. But if I try restarting it w/o stepping on the gas peddle it would stall out. I noticed that this occurs mainly after I have driven the car for a while.

I brought the car back in and they changed the TPS but the problem persists. They suggested I change the IAC.

Prior to the service, the car ran just fine with no issues starting from cold or warm.

I called this morning describing this problem to the mechanic, and he mentioned that the throttle body was cleaned.

I am a noob in car repairs, so if someone can provide some insight on what could possibly be the problem, maybe I can clue the mechanic in a bit.

IAC for sure. The valve gets clogged from carbon buildup. Just need to clean it out with throttle body/carb cleaner! Buy an o-ring just in case from Toyota.

I guess it is poor timing because the car worked perfectly fine before I brought it in for a routine maintenance.

He did indicate that the TB was cleaned. He suggested replacing the IAC. I hope this does this trick.

It seems like the #1 problem with 3.4L's is the IAC. You'll see if you pull it, its gunked up. Just take your time and spray it clean. You can move the little valve around, and you'll see there's a resistance.

I usually clean mine once a year! My new truck has a brand new throttle body on it, obviously the PO did not ever discover Yotatech

 

Definitely the IAC. This same thing happened to me over and over again last summer. So far some cleaner sprayed onto the IAC hole in the throttle body was all it took. When I stop being lazy ill actually take it apart and clean it for real.

 

I had the iac replaced and the car seems to be idling fine now.
