TRD E-Locker retrofit questions...PLEASE HELP!!

Hey guys, wondering if yall could help me out with this. Looking to retrofit a TRD locking 3rd member into my '86 rear end, and have researched that it's possible to fit into the pickup axle housing by simply clearancing the housing and installing new studs where they need to be. With that said, I just had a few questions:

1. What's a good price to pay for one of these units? I have found they are pretty hard to come by, but have been quoted $550 from a reputable Toyota bone yard. Is this high, average or low? Does anybody know of any for sale for a good price?

2. Does anybody know if the ring and pinion from the pickups will mate up with the TRD 3rd member? I need to know if I can fit the 4.56 R&P from my truck's 3rd onto the TRD 3rd. Is this possible?

Any advice / help would be greatly appreciated!!

EDIT: My rear 3rd IS FROM a V6 truck!!! COMPLETELY forgot to mention that crucial point!!! Sorry guys!!!

Biggest drawback I see is having to modify the housing.

Everyone I know who has retrofitted an elocker has regretted it.

price is about the going rate it seems.
the gears should work, but not positive, I would send a PM or email to the master of Toyota gear set ups : ZUK he has an awesome website : gearinstalls.com

what are your plans for the wiring? If the ORS harness comes up, keep in mind they succumbed to the economy a couple of years ago...sucks because they made some awesome products

Why would they regret it? I did it and love it

Also, I believe your gears will only work if they are from a V6 3rd

A lot of guys from the east have problems with the actuator getting gummed up from the mud and water they frequently encounter on the trails.

IMO, an ARB or Yukon Zip Locker is stronger. And, damn near the same price once you factor in the wiring harness, and cost of modifying the housing. Not to mention that if anything ever happens to the rear 3rd, you can't easily swap in a spare 3rd since the housing is modified.

Oh, and then there is the pesky actuator that fails easily, the need for a $50-$75 E-locker guard, and how slow they engage/disengage.

I have run E-lockers. Wouldn't again. I love my ARBs now and wouldn't change a thing.

I'll do that...and I hear the 12voltguy makes a pretty good setup for these swaps.

Thanks for the input...I have encountered several points good and bad, will have to do some more research. Never heard of the yukon zip locker...is it selectable?? this is the whole point...trying not to spend a grand total of like $1600 for a single ARB, compressor, and gear setup.

Also...technically, wouldn't it only become easier to swap in 3rd's since tacomas are more abundant and only starting to hit the junkyards?? as time goes on, wouldn't it only get harder to get 3rd's for the pickups and easier to get them for tacomas?

When he said V6, he meant if the gears you have lying around are for a 4cylinder third or a v6 third. There is a a difference.

Check it

V6 gears. See how they cross from v6 turbo to elocker axles?

4Cylinder gears. See how these don't cross?

I'm guessing since you have an 86 that you most likely have a 4cylinder third. So the answer is no, they will not interchange.

What I meant was that a few years ago I upgraded to a V6 4runner 3rd that had 4.56 gears in it. Sorry for the confusion
