Auxiliary fuel tank

Auxiliary fuel tank
I'm thinking of making a auxiliary fuel tank for my 1990 pickup I have a flatbed so I have lots of clearance but i don't think I want a very big fuel tank maybe 5 gallons? Id make it out of aluminum and probably make it gravity feed into the main tank with the turn of a valve. I'm not sure how hard it would be to make it into it's own fuel tank with a separate pump. I just want a small backup tank. Any ideas would be great. thanks

Finding a tank from a junkyard might be easier, but probably not in the capacity you're looking for. You might find buying one is better than building one, since you want to make sure it won't leak.
The concern with a gravity fed tank is that if you rupture the line you use to transfer fuel at any point, you're going to lose all your fuel. The transfer pump is a better way to go.
These are my opinions, so take them for what they're worth.

We have lots of scrap aluminum so building the tank would be free. I'm not to concerned about leaking my in les pretty good at welding. Do you have any suggestions for a good transfer pump.
Thanks

Good at welding aluminum? And pretty good won't cut it when welding a fuel cell. It needs to be pretty much perfect. This the reason Fuel cells are so spendy!
Why only 5 gallons? Is this rig towed to the trail?

i have seen aux tanks that go around the spare tire mount on the rear crossmember. its a dual tank kit with fuel senders and all. it sounds like you want a reserve tank. i think you should go for it and weld on up. put a top mount filler on it and a gravity line into the stock tank. good luck

I don't think welding up the tank is gona be to hard. I've seen aftermarket fuel tanks that have a plastic bladder I wonder if you can buy a insert like that. 5 gallons might be to small I still need to figure out how big it would have to be. I don't use my spare tire carrier so I could put it back there but I would rather put it beside the main fuel tank.
