Help! Trying to fix horn. Steering wheel is off. Easy fix isn't so easy.

Both horns have been dead for months, even after replacing. I thought I'd found the answer to my problem in this thread (see post #8). I got the steering wheel off, flipped it over and there no screws of any kind holding anything on. I'm guessing the fix in that thread is for an earlier model 4runner than mine (2001). Anyone have any ideas how to fix my horn before I admit defeat and put the steering wheel back on?

The back of my steering wheel.

i had this problem with a after market steering wheel gt grant to be exact. it seems when you turn the whell it rubs thru the copper disc that has power to it .so when you press the horn it touches and completes the circuit. but if its wore down in spots it cant complete the circuit. so i used a solder gun and was able to get the conection to the contacters on the horn assemble. hope this helps

I don't know what the copper disk is.

there should be something copper or other conductive material that is hot so when you press the horn it completes the circuit. try looking for wear spots on the round part in the center of the horn assembly and on the steering assembly there is a point of contact to make that work. try it with a test light to see were the power is located.just to center of steering column area.

It's hard to believe I've been without a horn for so long. Without it I'm forced to give other drivers the finger rather than honk. Reviving this post in hopes to get other options. I tried the methods in this post but couldn't get it to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It used to work. At least the driver's side horn did for sure. It slowly got quieter until no sound came out at all. I tried replacing with an aftermarket dual tone set but that has never work.

The vehicles with air bags have a different set up then the older ones.

I think your gonna need to check out the FSM I have one for a 2000 Tacoma`

In my FSM for the Tacoma the horn contacts are in the top horn pad i can only guess that there is some sort of harness that plugs in below when the horn pad comes off .

Never having had one apart to really look at.

You have ruled out a bad horn relay or that the horns just died.
