Is front drive shaft supposed to spin when 4wd is Not engaged?

I have an 85 pickup. My mechanic friend said the front drive shaft should spin even when the truck is not in 4wd. I thought that was wrong. I drove on it to get it home, because I couldn't fix it there and my front shaft at the point where it goes into the transfer case (cv joint?) mangaled itself up. I took it off to get it home.
Are my locking hubs not working? I know they aren't factory. If they aren't working would it cause the front to spin when not in 4wd? And if i need to get new locking hubs, should i just go to a junkyard and get factories? Or could it be something else entirely?
Thanks

The front driveshaft should not spin out of 4WD unless you have the front hubs locked.

Some trucks always spin the front driveshaft (older Ford Rangers for example), but not 4Runners. Your mechanic friend should do his research lol

well he's got a SA pickup....but you're right.

the only time the front driveshaft will spin is:

1. the front hubs are in the LOCKED position.

2. the transfercase is in 4-HI or 4-LOW
