Ok I've been through the forums about rebuilds. I'm specifically wondering about oregon engine rebuilders? It seems all the threads are about the 22R's. Couldn't find any info about anyone having the 5vz-fe being rebuilt there was just wondering if anyone has gone to this shop with this motor and what their experience was? I'm just not set up to do this work myself? Just trying to weigh my options. Or do you guys think it would be better to get a imported long block, or one from the junk yard? Not really looking for performance just dependibility.

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you. Bought a “99” 4Runner with a V6 2wd at auction and come to find out it needs a new motor. First looked into having engine rebuilt and lowest bid was around $3500.00. I've had a few engines rebuilt in other cars without very much luck. They usually last just past the 1 year warranty and die. Reading review of some of the engine rebuilders in the Austin area and that option isn’t looking very good. Second option was getting engine from junk yard. Well needless to say I purchased a used 2002 4runner engine from a junkyard and will be installing that soon. Even with that option you still have 2 choices-pay someone to do it or do it yourself. Estimate to have someone else install it vary from $1,500 to $2,000. I’m thinking about installing it myself to save the money but still doing research on what is different on the 1999 and 2002 engines. So far I’ve been told that 2002 had throttle by wire and there may also be a difference in intake. This will be my first install if I decide to do it. If you do go this route just try to do as much research as you can.

 

I have been running a rebuilt 5vz longblock from Oregon Rebuilders for the past 25,000 miles and it is still running strong. In fact, it idles and revs so smoothly it feels better than the original motor. I installed it myself - all I needed to buy was an engine stand and cherry picker which all together ran about $300. It is really a pretty easy job if you take your time and are careful about it.

 

Ended up going with a local motor rebuilder, was recommended from from friend and Toyota dealership. Top to bottom rebuild was $3100. Now I still have to figure out why there was no gas and no spark at the cylinders to begin with, yippee. Well at least I'm one step closer. Will start install tomorrow.
