1987 4Runner Engine quits pulling at like 3000 rpm!

Hey guys,

I have a 1987 4Runner EFI 22RE that I just got done doing a solid axles swap on. Needless to say its started running poorly right when I was ready to enjoy it and I don't know whats wrong with it.

You can rev it up fine in neutral but when you start out in first and other gears it won't go above like 3000 rpm its sounds like. I don't have a tach mounted on it so I can't really tell. I thought it was the fuel pump but its not cause I just got done replacing it and it still does the same thing.
It just started doing it all of the sudden about a month ago. When you take off it gets up to a certain rpm and stops going up and just holds at that rpm even with your foot on the floor. I know something is up cause this thing is normally pretty quick and will run fine on the interstate.

Anybody run across this problem?

Thanks,
Luther

Check the vane in the AFM to make sure it's not sticking and moves freely.

I would have changed the fuel filter first before the pump if you thought it was a fuel problem.

sounds like a fuel issue.

I rebuilt the engine about a year or so ago and it has ran well ever since. We bought the truck after it had sit in the woods for about 8 years with a rod knock. The reason I jumped directly to the pump was because it was an ebay pump that was only like 40 dollars and I figured it was just a crappy product since you get what you pay for but I was wrong.

The gear and tire are correct. It's 5.29s with 35s. I'll check that timing cause you never know. It might have slipped. It just seems strange because it didn't happen gradually. Imight be leaning towards that AFR door.

fuel filters can clog rather quickly and are cheap fix. also look into the fuel pressure regulator as they can go pretty quickly as well. Don't start replacing things though without testing them. Probably a good thing to have a fuel pressure gauge.

I had a fuel filter plug up on an 89 Camry, same symptoms as you describe. Hey, probably time for one of those anyway, right?

Checked the AFM door and everything seems to be working fine. I'll check the fuel filter but I have my doubt about it being plugged since it is so new. Not many miles on this engine.

Is there anyway to check the fuel pressure on these things without having to add a gauge or drill and tap the rail?

I wanted to update this because I never posted back. The fuel filter was completely stopped up with a bunch of red dirt. Don't know how it happened so quick but I guess I should've changed it first.
