Article claims newer oil damages older engines (even rebuilt)

I found this article online and would like to hear your comments in direct relation to our 22R engines.

http://www.economist.com/blogs/babba...0/11/tribology

Says our older engines should be using more zinc in the motor oil than most oils on the shelf. I am just about to get my 22R rebuilt back from the machine shop next week and will need to be very careful. What oil brands and weight do you guys recommend for the break-in period (not sur how long break-in period is either) and for the rest of the engine's life?

been many threads on what types of oil to use and you will always get many results, but I believe most of us swear by the Rotella 15/40 and now I think they also have a 10/30 available as well. I use that and Valvoline 15/40 in mine. Up untill about 5,000 miles I used the Valvoline 10/30. IIRC both Rotella and Valvoline have higher zinc content in them than any other on the shelf oil. Not to mention will not break down as much as other oils since they are actually designed for diesel engines that go 10-15,000 miles between oil changes if not more. They also have higher amounts of detergents as well.

There are also many theories on how long and how to break in these engines as well. You might want to just search as this has been covered alot as well.

Somebody told me you just run a straight 30wt for the first 500 miles, then go to a 10/30 or whatever.

Recently fully rebuilt my engine and I did quite a bit of research on this.

I ended up using Shell Rotella T 30W for initial break in (500) then switched to Shell Rotella T 15W40, eventually at 3000 miles will go to Shell Rotella T6 5W40 Synthetic.

All oil changes got Toyota brand oil filters.

Make sure to break the engine in properly because you have 1 chance to seat the ring properly.

My dad used to own/operate an engine rebuilding shop and almost exclusively ran all of our vehicles on Shell Rotella T. He swore by it.
