About to get new tires...

...but I have a question first. My 92 4Runner came with the small 225s. Besides the tire size, is there any difference between my 4Runner and the next which came with the bigger size tires? I'm about to get the 31s but want to know if they will fit or if I will have to re-gear.

Thanks in advance.

31s will fit just fine.

My rig was also geared for the puny tires.
Some had the optional 31" tire package, some did not.

You will notice a performance hit right off the bat, even worse with an auto tranny.
But it's very livable.

You won't even have to crank the T bars any since these tires were an option.

However it will look better if you get Downey coils and then crank up the T bars a bit.
The stance will look like the above pic afterwards.

If you do regear in the future, 4:88s should handle up to a 32" tire.
33s would be better off with 5:29s.

Yeah, my '92 has 31's on it and it runs fine. It came with it, so I am guessing that it was geared for the bigger tires. I am not going to ever go smaller. I like the bigger tires. By the way, what are you planning on getting? :fireman:

Okay I'm planning on getting 32s here soon to go with my 2.5 lift(making darn sure that nothing is going to rub). My question is, do you think I will need to re-gear with these tires no running m=on my 3rd gen. I know I will have considerable power loss, I'll get over that aspect anyways after I see my baby sitting all high and proud. If you think I should re-gear, to what ratio should I gear?

What size engine do you have? What size tires came stock on your 4runner?

My guess is if you have the 2.7L and small stock tires, then you will feel a loss of power. It would feel like it has less power than Corey's setup (since he has 31s).

If the big tires came stock and you have the 3.4L then you'll be fine.

Right now I'm running on 30s and yes I do have the V6, so you think I should be okay then?

Yeah, I think you should be fine. Besides, it sounds like you're not afraid to regear anyways so if you don't like the power loss then you can regear.

I'll do anything to keep my baby running happy, and keep it running for another 100K. Thanks man.

About to get new tires...

Hey,
I'm thinking about doing the same thing. I've got the smaller tires and would like to get some 31x10.5 on it. How much slower is it with the different tires? Do you get better gas mileage? One more question: How expensive is a new gear set for a 2wd 1990 4Runner with an auto?

Have fun.

I don't know about the cost that you asked about, but I don't think that you would need to. I'm going up 2 sizes on mine this Fri. (from 30s to 32s) and I was told that I should be okay and not need to re-gear. I know that I will be a bit slower and that my milage will decrease as well, but I'm ready for that, and if the diff. in power is realyl noticable then I'll re-gear but no need to if it's not all that bad. I think you should be fine if you jump up to 31s. Just my .02 though

I run 32's witha stock 22re and gears and i'm going to 33's. You will be fine without gearing. I can still accelerate pretty damn well. At high speeds it takes some time to accelerate. It's worth going up to bigger tires!

Yeah, but he has either the dog 3.0L or the puppy 2.4L . Both have much less power than yours.

DH6twinotter, having said that, you'll probably be fine, but be prepared for less power and fewer MPG. You'd have the same setup as Corey and he doesn't seem to mind it. I *think* he said he cruises the freeway at about 2000rpms while I cruise at about 3000rpm. Most of the power comes at about 3000rpms.
