1981 tach

ok so i got a gauge cluster from a 1981 2wd pickup. it has a tach. mine did not originally have a tach. so i think i know what wires are for the tach (the ones right above the speedo cable) but neither wire has power. so where do i get the power for one of those wires.

i checked my book and the there should be a green plug on the driver side kick pannel with alot of wires going to it it is hook to a grey or brown box could be black to,or it might have been removed if you have no emmisions equip on the engine.it should have a black wire with a red stripe that is your signal wire from the dizzy i believe,i thought it was yellow cuz thats the color of wire i used to run it up to the back of the tach that should be the only wire to hook up to it if i remeber correct id have to look at the back of the tach to double check.

ok i looked at my plug and it must be a blue wire with a red stripe.the wire diagrams are a pain to tell what some of the colors of the wires are.i did this mod on my 81 2wd but i sold it a wile ago so im trying to rember what wire i hook to the tach.here is a pic of the plug under the dash near the drivers kick panel just above the hood release.

no computer nessasary that is the wire going to the computer.comp being on the other side of the plug.ie plug goes into comp. you should be able to snip the blue wire with red stripe and run it up to the back of the tach.im pretty shure it take just that wire.

your computer can still be there it is the plug that plugs into the comp.none behind the dash you will have to run your own wire up to the back of the cluster.the blue wire with a red stripe on that plug will give you the tach signal run a wire from there up behind the cluster and use a ring term on the back of the tach where it hooks up
