Is a crankshaft bolt tight enough if I use the "bump the starter" method?

I recently had to replace the water pump and timing belt on my 3VZE.

well Phil.....that actually was a question I had....

when i did mine with my webbing-rig.....i was able to torque it to spec.

 

Thanks Jerry, but I don't have any tool to get the proper torque on it for re assembly, plus no way to keep it stationary either. I had a wrench on it but the motor would turn when I got to a certain point.

When you put your crank bolt back on, what did you use to keep everything stationary?

 

i'll try to find the exact post (THREAD "B")....but webbing / anti skid padding.....tied off to my frame (passenger's side)...then a wrench between everything and gave it a tourniquet twist.

I tried some rachet straps on the pulleys trying to get it loose, to no avail. Then remembered the "bump the starter" method. It worked like a charm.

 

oh...i know that "bump" trick works....


to take the bolt off, i was able to get the webbing tight enough.....to get it back on (all sanded and shiny painted and smooth) and could not get a good grip....that's why i used a wrench to give it a twist......after that it was easy as falling.

 

I wouldn't trust that method alone for tightening. I mean, if did it that way, you'd be wise to go back and check it with a torque wrench. But, if you could do that, I suppose you wouldn't be asking your question, would you?

i put my truck in 5th gear..blocked all 4 tires..and gave her hell with a 3ft breaker bar...to get mine loose.

to tighten mine, i'm going to do the same thing..except with a torque wrench...

mine only goes to 160lb ft...so i'm going to go just about 1/5th turn past that.

I bumped it with the starter again for good measure.
Well, I filled up the radiator, checked all belts and hoses, put coil wire back on and fired it up. idled it up to temp, checked water level again. Water pump not leaking. sounds like new belt is sqeaking a little unless its one of the other 3.

So far so good.

 

Anybody else??????

It runs but I'd like to be secure about that crank bolt.

 

i'm gonna go with CAMO on that one......torque wrench, same technique as removal set to spec.....sounds like a plan.

 

yes but he is Automatic 92Toy..he can't put his truck in gear and it not move...i don't think?


if a vehicle is in PARK though, it will not move more than about 10" or a foot...so put it in park..and go at it!!!

 

true....can't start it in gear (i have an automatic).

OK....do it my way. it worked for me, it WILL work for you.......JUST DOOOOOOOO IT!!!!!!

remember waaaay back when..........i was a newb and had no clue and i came up with that method.....the FSM shows a chain wrench so i just improvised my own.
