Another Auto to 5spd swap Begins...(PICS)

A340F tranny is slipping too much and now another 5spd swap on yotatech beings...

My Vehicle: '87 XtraCab Pickup 22RE A340F
Donor Vehicle: '86 Reg Cab 22R G52 5spd

My friend is abandoning his '86 to work on another '86 he has with a 22RE in it to build up. He said $300 buys all the drivetrain stuff I can rip off of it to do the swap. A buddy of mine offered to help me after hours at his shop for cheap. We removed the trans and TC, front drive shaft, full pedal assembly, crossmember and clutch cable from it before it went off to become someone elses project. I think we have everything off of it I THINK we need.

My '87...

Steam clean the bell housing...

I'll try to document as much as possible for the next guy who wants to do a swap on his rig.

Well it was my rig's turn to be hoisted up in my buddy's shop to get that slipping A340F out. Many thanks to cwbyup2002. Thanks for all your help so far...and the shop of course.

Notice the transfercase cooler hanging off the auto. It's slung over the top of the tranny in between the two transmissions. I didn't even know I had a transfercase cooler!

I am in the process also and i was wondering.... My truck (auto) has the 430 gears that is sitting on 31.10.50x15 tires. I have a 88 regular cab short bed (donor) truck. Is the drive shafts in my truck usable with the manual trans? I was also wondering about how it will change my interstate speeds? Do i need to take out the gears from the donor truck or can i utilize my gears? Any and all help would greatly be appreciated Thanks in advance Billy

Could you take a picture of the blue and white plugs on the automatic trans wiring harness and post then up ?. My 86 4Runner had an auto to manual swap done, but the back up light were never reconnected and the old automatic trans was disposed of before i could get the wiring off of it. If the plugs and wiring on your old automatic trans are the same as mine i would be willing to buy it from you if you don`t need them. Or could you tell me witch plug goes to the back up light switch and what color the wires are so i can figure out what wires to tap into.

you should be able to utilize your 430s no problem. But check the plate on the firewall of your donor truck. If it has the factory 410s that most came with then dont bother. But you might luck out and find it has some 456s or 488s. Quite an upgrade from your 430s. As far as the driveshaft goes ive found that my g52 manual is almost 2 inches shorter than my a340f auto. Im going to buy a 4crawler driveshaft spacer to make up the gap as much as i can to retain my 1 piece driveshaft. I would imagine it would be the same for you to. On the freeway im expecting to have a bit more acceleration and to turn a few more rpms but not much. I can guarentee the auto weighs a ton more than the 5spd so that should help move the truck better down the road.

more pics...

Steam cleaned the donor truck's pedal assembly. (Of course a lot of elbow grease with steel wool could do something similar if you don't have a big honkin steam cleaner laying around.)

A bushing with the perfect diameter, (1.25in i think) was a great way to drill the pilot hole for the hole saw. Gotta give cwbyup2002 the credit for that idea.

Got the 4crawler driveshaft spacer to make up the difference in tranny length. it's a 2inch length difference between a340f and g52 but 1.5in is the biggest I could get. Thnx 4crawler you rule!

Alright! That's it! I can't take it anymore...

Can someone confirm that's an f case for me? I see the rear lines coming off for the little radiator and I'm thinking H, something I didn't know the f cases had...

If the f case has that, this will be my "learnt something new today"...

Sell me the detent cable off of your old Auto? It's the cable that runs to the throttle body.

You should be able to reuse your factory driveshaft. I can almost promise you that the one out of your donor truck will be too short. After looking at it under load and on the rack some more. I could have went without the driveshaft adapter, but I would have had less play with the driveshaft yoke. I'm still happy I got it. I like to retain the factory geometry of the driveshaft and position of where the tranny meets the shaft, but if you are short on the cash for it, and can't make your own... you could probably get away with skipping it. I will try to post a good pick of the neutral safety switch wires that need to be bypassed. I couldn't really find too many good ones on the ole inter-web.

Also I just got my new transfercase mount. since my donor's was shot....

I'll get a good pic of mine to post up. I couldn't find a good one online when I began the swap either.

HAHA, thnx. I'm looking to replace my solid bench soon if possible. I'd like to swap in either tan SR5's or 40/60 bench... But I can't find either.
