Was just under the truck and realized the clutch fork boot was leaking motor oil. GREAT! The oil was definitely motor oil and not gear oil, and was black. Smelled like burning clutch.

I have receipts from the PO that he changed the rear main and clutch only 5 years ago. (About 30k miles).

So is there any way of saving the clutch, or am I looking to get another one? Whats your favorite clutch for these trucks. :/

Just when I thought I was getting my truck running good, I find this. Starting to piss me off.

 

If you change a clutch it is always cheap insurance to do the rear main seal at the same time so you don't do labor twice.

I prefer OEM Aisin clutch kits as that is what I sell and use on all my Toyotas, trail or street.

Had my Aisin in for 159K and before I swapped in a new one during my build, .... I inspected mine, ...it still had 20K left on it....But who knows, since my rear main was leaking like a pig... could've been more like 200miles, lol.

Haha, yeah I know I have to change the rear main if I am in there, but I was wondering if the leak itself will kill my clutch!? Its driving OK right now but I am assuming its going to saturate it with oil soon enough and cause slipping. Right?

The guy had the REAR MAIN and the CLUTCH both replaced 5 years ago and its already leaking! The clutch (from what I can see through the clutch fork boot) "looks" new still.

 

It can also, equally as important, cause flywheel damage, due to hot spots being created by oil getting on there.

Let me know man. I replaced the clutch on my Tacoma last december.. No issues..

 

My rear main was peaking at clutch was toast. I was told that the oil saved the flywheel but also said it was the worst they had ever seen.

I went with the Marlin HD and did rear main, boot, and slave and MC too. That was 1k miles ago and now it's not running right.

 

I am wondering the same thing. I put a hd marlin crawler clutch kit in less that a thousand miles ago. Then my rear main seal started leaking. I fixed that but my clutch still grabs occasionally in 1st.
I would go ahead and through a new clutch in there. Your already going to have to take the clutch out and at least the clutch has been in there a while. The goal is not to have to drop the transmission a less than month later like me.

I've never dropped a tranny before, but, I think if you've got a nice transmission jack (Id probably just rent one) I think it would make it a little easier.

Besides unbolting the transmission and dropping it, the rest looks somewhat straight forward. But, I know for a fact I'll get myself into something
