I decided to rebuild my front diff. instead of replacing it with a junk yard part that may have as many miles as the original. i've searched here and on the web for a detailed article that will walk me through it, since this is my first. anyone here know of a good source on the internet with good understandable instructions? hopefully with pics?

fsm (factory servie manual) would probably be your best bet

 

i've got that info, but usually people who have done it come up with homemade SSTs and shortcuts.

that's some help, but the way he describes removing the "stubs" (3rd pic down) just does not work. there is a C clip in there, which i can't seem to be able to see or get to. i've done this on a chevy, which is similar, and it seemed like i had to remove the pin that holds the spider gears. but here, with the ring gear in the way the pin won't be able to move enough to get it out.

 

in fact in the 4th pic, he mentions the clip "stay's" in the groove. how the hell do you get the stub to come out with the clip in the groove? it seems like he's leaving out a VERY important step.

they omit how you get the stubs out. is this such a piece of common knowledge, that it's not worth mentioning?

 

you dont have to remove the clip .. just do as he says and it will pop out with the clip in place ..

OK, i got it. the clip is different than i expected. it's kind of a spring clip, that compresses. thanks for the help guys, no doubt i'll be back.

 

next question?? where do i get this bearing? went to the only 2 auto parts stores around here and they were both clueless. dealer item?

the whole reason i'm rebuilding the diff is because when i grab the short side (passenger side) axle, there is a bunch of up down/back and forth play. it seems like these small needle bearings are supposed to keep that from happening. these bearings were not included in the "master rebuild kit" i bought.

also how to get the old one out?

 

go with a straight axel

if regeared a few and there all loose like that and i have never had a problem with the stubs, i wouldn't worry about it.

now where the axle enters the spindle is a different story lol.

do straight axles not have bearings that can go bad? if so sign me up. i'm not a hardcore wheeler, i use 4x4 mainly during the winter when it snows. i've had plenty of solid axle trucks, but at 56 comfort is more important than hardcore. my IFS gets me into all the places i want to be.

 

jezz, there's a lot of play, that can't be the way it's supposed to be, is it. i posted a question somewhere on here about this a while back and someone said they had the same problem. he went to a shop and was told there should be only a couple of thous play. i've got about 1/8 inch.

you can actually hear the stuff flopping around on dirt roads. almost sure that's not what it was like from the factory.

 

it wasn't like that from the factory lol..

i have had that much play in them and had no noise problems. i mean i would replace them to if they weren't so hard to find. the only other reason i never replaced them is because i crawled under like 5 yota's and they were all like that. never had any problems wheeling them like that though.
