truck wont start after water pump change

Ok, so here is the situation. I changed the water pump the other day. Didn't remove the timing belt completely, but took it off the tensioner. I made sure that both of the top two pulleys marks matched up before we removed the belt.

After putting everything back together, the battery was dead, tried to jump it, it cranks but wont start. It started the first time, barely idled, couldn't accelerate, and then died. Tried adjusting the distributor in the meantime, but it makes no difference.

I know I'm going to have to take everything apart again. Is my timing way off now? I don't really know what I need to do to make sure its correct.

Help!

was not aware you had to take the timing cover off to change a waterpump. At least not on a 22r(re). Oh wait you haven't mentioned what motor you have. can't help you past that. sorry.

I take it you have the 3vze correct? when you pulled your timming belt off the tensioner you could have knocked it out a tooth or so in timming, try retimming it and go from there, i had the same problem just make sure that you timming notches on the cam gears and the crank are set on the notch

yes I have the 3vze. I never took the timing belt completely off, just moved it off the tensioner. I cranked the motor so both the cam pulleys were at tdc before I took the belt off, and made sure they matched once I put it back on, but never removed the crank pulley.

Do I need to pull everything off including the crank pulley now to make sure all 3 match up?

When you have your timing marks lined up on the cams, look at you notch on the crank pully and make sure its at the 0 mark, if not then your more than likely outta time

Double check all the plugs are connected. A timing issue would result in valves hitting pistons.

even with a non-interference motor like the 3vze?

I got it running. Thanks, I had trouble finding 0, I thought it was at 12'0 clock, but once I found the marks for 0, I felt dumb.

I got my truck back!
