Does your brake fluid look like this?

I flushed the brake system on the '83 today. The 4Runner will follow tomorrow. I pulled this out of the '83:

ThenI flushed the cooling system and pulled this out:

I almost looks like straight ethyl-glycol undiluted.

Just thought I'd share

Wow, and you made it back from Minnesota on that. I'm sure those two systems are breathing much easier now!

Yeah, I know it. Really scary stuff!
The brake fluid was a black as old motor oil and poured just as well. The first quart of fluid that trickled out of the radiator was orange

Nasty. Speaking of which, where do you take that for disposal? No one out here seems to take antifreeze anymore, except for the Rooney Road recycling center, and you have to pay them and set an appointment for dumping, and then you can only use it once a year! BTW, I'm going today so if you want to dump the brake fluid & antifreeze, let me know as I have a 1:30 appointment.

I hope not, none of those systems is supposed to "breathe", brakes = mushy pedal or right drop to the floor in hard braking situations.

cooling system = air pocket traps behind thermostate, trick it so that it doesn't open and you got overheating problems

...hehe just thought I would correct ya, my teacher would have your head if he heard you say that. He had mine when I called the "parking brake" the "e-brake".

If you have a PepBoys around (don't know if they're out there) they'll take the stuff for free.

Tried them, Checker (Schucks/Kragen), Auto Zone & Advanced, no one takes it out here due to the collection costs. Have already dropped it off, so that's done for another year!

Decided to flush the brakes in the 4Runner today. I'm ashamed at my lack of attention to this item. Everything was going well until I bled the left rear drum:

If you look closely, you can see little drops of water floating around in there.

Now my brake systems is breathing ( ) synthetic.

Good thing you did that or it'd be all go, no stop! How'd the master cylinder change out go?

Didn't get to that today. The valve adjustments took a little longer than I would have liked. I bought a replacement valve cover gasket that took a dump on me on me at Alameda and Kipling. I was out on a test drive to see how it felt after the adjustments. Rounded the corner onto northbound Kipling and the cab filled with white smoke. I thought I threw a rod or something. Pulled into Jeffco Health's parking lot, popped the hood and watched a steady stream of Castrol synthetic spew onto the exhaust manifold. I limped it home, jumped in the Runner and picked up a new gasket. Seems to be working okay now. It was just a faulty gasket. I'll be getting up early to swap out the master cylinder tomorrow.

That sucks. Both PepBoys and Advanced take both antifreeze and oil free of charge here. Years ago, we used to try to hide it in the garbage, but the garbage man would always find it. We would wrap the containers in black garbage bags, and put them in the middle of another black garbage bag surrounded by garbage. That bag would be placed in the garbage can with other bags of garbage. The guy would sort through it and leave that bag with the containers on the curb. I don't know how he did it.

B/C the weight of the bag, and he was probably wise to the idea and knew who on which block worked on their own cars. You can learn a lot from people's garbage!

I thought landfills HAD to take oil and coolant free of charge. That is to discourage people from dumping it in there backyard or sewer system. Maybe thats only here in GA, and NC. At our local trash sites they have oil dumping containers, coolant containers, battery dumping, etc. These places actually make a profit selling this stuff to recyclers. At least that was what I was told by a city manager I know.

Not anymore that I know of. I called PepBoys to take my antifreeze and they said they would. When I got there, they said they wouldn't. I hate that place. Anyways, I then went to my local dealer to get some parts, and asked them if they would take it since it was in my truck. They said they would just this one time. They said they used to have companies come and pay them to take it away, and now, no ones wants it. They (Toyota) has to pay someone to come and get it, and they say it's not cheap.

It isn't, that's why they pass it along to the customer. Toyota charged me a disposal fee of $5.15 for the antifreeze in my Tundra. Hell, even finding places around sac to dispose of stuff is hard. Oil, well now you have to call ahead PRIOR to pickup on curb side, otherwise they won't do it.

PepBoys claim they take oil, but I just don't want to mess with that place again. I'm draining all my gear oils and engine oil this weekend. I need to find a place to take it all.

I believe he was saying that the fluids flow much better for better performance of both systems, not that they had an air leak.

As with all things, it varies. Down here in the Springs you have to call El paso county for disposal options.

(so look for the local county website and try to track down the waste disposal number and/or directions).

EG isn't seen a lot because most people put it down sanitary sewer. EG itself is a food source for the bugs down at the treatment plant, but who is to say what the silicates and other corrsion inhibitors do to them.
