So i found my little gremlin making poping noises. My front sway bar bushings are shot and ripped in half. Also my rear sway bar links and basically done as well and they are stripped out anyway. So i need to replace my front sway bar bushings and im gonna do all 4 sway bar links, should i go with wab fab rears and front discos? They are expensive tho, but are they worth it? Is there a way to make my own end links? Im handy and have access to a shop. What front sway bar bushings should i get? What other bushings should i replace while im already in that far? Should i do lower ball joints as well, did the uppers recently? Anyway please give me some input. Steering bushings have already been replaced. Most everything else is original as far as i know. Let me know what you think.

Replace the rears and throw the whole front sway bar in the trash.

some suggest front sway bar disconnects are a total waste of money/time. I believe I have read this on Sonoran Steel website for example.

But opinions vary-just throwing it out there.

Yes on the lower ball joints-depending on your mileage I would most definitely recommend it to the 200K and up crowd. An ounce of prevention .....

 

Wheelers sells a set of poly sway bar bushings in a kit. The kit also comes with new poly bump stops (which I didn't install because my current set was fine).

Just to make sure eveyone notices that SpecialScottie has a '85, and not a 3rd. Gen 4Runner; totally different animal.

If I remember correctly, there is some bad juju with removing the rear swaybar on a 3rd. gen...the right front tire lifts into the air during sharp turns (a-la trophy truck) and is in general pretty squirrely overall.

After my end links broke for the 2nd time, I removed the entire sway bar. Yes the body does roll a little more around turns, but after a while it becomes second nature. Heck when I'm driving my wife's Explorer I find myself leaning into the corner in my seat like I've apparently become accustomed to doing in my 4Runner. Don't drive like it's a 2-seater sporster, and you'll be fine.

 

You guys crack me up. Don't mind it?? That is exactly the point. There is a noticeable difference without a sway bar. Yes, you can drive without out. No, I would not drive without it if you paid me. If I wanted to disconnect it at will, i would buy the quick discos from Wabfab...

 

I drive my 4Runner kinda hard and there's no way I'd drive it w/o swaybars since the margin of error at high speeds is greatly reduced and could result in a rollover.

I vote for disconnects if you have to have that extra travel when off road but if you are on road most of the time why compromise the ride and your safety?

 

Until an emergency maneuver, then it will roll over. They are on there for a very good reason, and most state inspection stations will fail inspection for a missing sway bar.

 

Im looking into making my own. I agree my truck has enough body roll as it is.
