Rear axle bearing question
I'm replacing my rear bearings after one siezed and melted a week old super swamper.
do i need to have the axel pressed out of the bearing seat or is there a way i can do it at home without destroying my axels?

Yes, you have to have it all pressed.
However, if you got it so hot it melted a tire, I would get a new axle from a wrecking yard and be done with it. No sense doing all that work only find out you damaged the axle casting as well.

Here is a write-up: (you can do it without press but easier with a press)

it melted through heat conduction on the inside bead, and it went through a ply, burning it to my rim. i'm probably going to replace the shaft anyway, but i'd rather not have to. thanks for the page wabbit, but the "shadetree metod" would make me a little nervous, i'm just trying to keep costs down. also would i be able to use an axle from a 4 cylinder on my v6 or are they different alltogether?

Id get new shafts, just had new bearings pressed onto shafts from a local shop. When i got them back one shaft was mushroomed out by them whaling on it with a hammer it wouldnt fit back in the axle. I was heated to say the least.
