Possible rear end noise, via high pitched whine

I just bought a '97 4runner, and when i reach about 30mph or more it sounds like im driving on dry pavement in 4 wheel drive. Its pretty whiney sounded it does have a little bit of a raw metal grinding sound too. Doesw it sound like i need a new rear end? If so, what should i expect for this repair.
Thanks guys.

Very vague information you posted, we need some more info

Does it do it all the time? 2wd/4wd/Neutral
Why are you leaning towards the rear end? Have you pinpointed the noise to the rear axle?

Sorry. Yes it does it all the time. As I accelerate it gets louder and if I let off the gas it gets quite for a second then you can hear it again. A mechanic drove it and said it was the rear end. I thought that it was the wheel bearings but doesn't get louder if I turn left or right. I can't tell where it's coming from. Just going by what the mechanic said, but he's not a Toyota guy

Definitely seems like a rear diff issue.
Doesnt it sound sort of like a V12 Ferrari growling?
Or, possibly an electric motor whirring?
Mine sounded like the V12 and it turned out to be the pinion bearing took a dumper.
