Did a little wheeling yesterday, went through two water crossings and a mud pit. This morning I went out to find the rear leaking. Any ideas what might have caused this? Maybe water got in? Its definetly not water coming out though.

 

mustve just went out when wheelin.. just your rear pinion seal. easy fix

I did the same thing last year with my rig. The usual cause is the stock breathers, they get stuck open or closed and both options usually lead to the pinion seal s**tting the bed.

I changed the gear oil, pinion seal and did the extended breather mod and I've had no problems.

 

How is the extended breather mod done??? Is it just longer hose??

 

It's pretty easy.

There's a part from toyota that threads in the beather and comes with a section to slid the fuel line over it. I think it's some part from a Corolla manifold or something.

Here's all the stuff you'll need:

1.)Diff breather union from Toyota - (90404-51026)
2.) 1/4" fuel line (get however much you'll need to run it somewhere out of the way)
3.) Hose clamp to fit the fuel line onto the union, and a few zip ties to strap the hose along the frame.
4.) Some people find a small filter to put on the end and you can just leave it open. Just make sure you leave enough slack in the line to account for axle flex but not enough for the hose to pool diff fluid.

In shouldn't cost more than $30. Its a good mod for the money and added security.

87 is right on that breather fitting for the diff, its the smallest vacuum port on the 22RE EFI Plenum.

10 bucks says if you drain your oil it'll be full of water.
And clear your axle breather.
Mine did this, too, and my breather was plugged. I cleared it and it hasnt leaked since.

 

You can only get about 400 000 Kms (250 000 Miles) out of those toyota rear pinion seals..

 

Ok, I changed the pinion seal just like the directions on the post and link mentioned. Also did the extended breather mod. Figured that water, from the river crossing while offroading, might have gotten into the axle so I drained the differental fluid. Nothing odd about the fluid. Well replaceded it with fresh gear oil 85w/90. Took it for a test drive and NOW when I am deaccelerating I can hear roar as if I have tire nobbies. It doesnt happen when I am accelerating only on deaccelerating. STRANGE. So when I first heard this I came back swapped the gear oil and put fresh oil again but still same thing. Any Ideas or suggestions????

roaring is either diff fluid low or one of the teeth are chipped. happened in my mustang. but thats definitely your pinion seal leaking via the pictures.

 

Roaring on deceleration is the pinion bearings. They are either bad or have the wrong preload. I'm guessing you didn't put enough preload on it when you reinstalled the flange after changing the seal.

 

yea put it on stands and tighten pionion nut till there is a very slight drag and stake it
