I recently bought a 92 toyota pickup and have been in the process of trying to get it running, but am lost as to where to look next. The guy I bought it from said that he was able to get it to crank but not turnover and that it hasnt ran in years. I havent even heard it crank yet though. The engine wiring harness looks pretty rough, but id like to atleast hear it try to crank before putting more money into it. Anyways, I was wondering if you guys could take a look at some pics and tell me if you see anything out of the ordinary besides the battery terminal. Thanks for your help

First off get thee to the correct FSM (Factory Service Manual) For your model... And start looking at what might be missing or wrong. If it won't crank, is the starter bad? That's were I'd start.

And boy that engine bay is in rough looking shape. I really hope you didn;t pay too much for this thing.

 

Umm.. your ignightor coil does not look hooked up here. That's another reason it won't start!

You might put a 19mm socket on the end of a breaker bar and see if the crankshaft even moves (CW) before trying to replace the starter. I'm just thinking, "If this is what the outside of the motor looks like, what does the inside look like?"

I just completed a full rebuild of this motor (3VZE) and it cost me a little more than $3,000 in parts + machine shop work.

How many miles? You'll have to decide if you're up (financially, and/or physically) for fixing the current motor, or perhaps buying a reman and dropping it in.

 

Looks like there's a second one in the picture that is hooked up. Interesting.

 

Ly, I think hes just trying to get it to crank.
I would make sure the starter is in, secured and hooked up properly first as well. And make sure there is oil before doing so.

Yeah the radiator cap isn't even on there.... Lots of wierd stuff going on on the OUTSIDE in that engine bay!

 

Or that, and then the hose from the air box to where that plastic bag is covering is missing...

 

Thanks for the input guys. Ill try and see if the crankshaft will turn tomorrow after work. I bought it mainly for the body. Its a black extended cab that doesnt really have any rust on it. The engine has 205,000 thousand miles and had the head gaskets, timing belt, and injectors replaces at 160,000 miles. The guy I bought it from had only had it for a couple of months. He had bought it from his buddy who was the owner of it for most of its life. He said that it hasnt ran in about 3 years. When he bought it, he got it to the point of where it would crank but wouldnt start up. Im thing my harness or ecu you be part of the problem. Would a wiring harness out of a 4 runner work with my truck?
