How can I test my ignition coils on a 99 4Runner with the V-6 ? ThinI minght have one going bad . Picked up a bad miss at take off and cruising . Can floor it and it almost goes away . OR if it is in park you can't tell it . Thanks

 

i dont know how to test them but they are cheap, just buy a new one. check out youtube, you'll prolly find a video on there showing you how to test it.

 

Cheap ? Everywhere I look they are around $90 each . Not cheap when I am only income for family right now . Thanks

 

The coil may be cheap...I think you could pick one up from the zone for about $50-$75.... the igniter, on the other hand...is quite expensive... $300+ IIRC, keep searching on here for testing the igniter...I know I saw a thread about it not too long ago....

Never seen ignition coils go bad on a toyota. If its missing check engine light should come on, check it with a scanner

 

Coil packs are actually one of the more common causes for missing on the 3.4. Since you have 3 coil packs, replacing them at $75-90 ea. isn't very cheap on my standards either. Besides we don't even know if that's what's wrong and throwing parts at it and guessing is not the best way to diagnose and will almost always be the most expensive way to fix it.

Do you have a CEL code to tell you which cylinder is missing? If so, you can swap the coil pack with another one and if the miss moves to a different cylinder, you know which coil pack to replace instead of all 3. It could also be the coil boot(s) - the short rubber "wires" that go from the coil packs to the plugs directly below. These are much cheaper than the packs.

If you don't have a CEL, the coil packs can also be tested using a volt meter - refer to Team420's link to the FSM to get the proper #s to check it against.
