i have a 1990 22re

so i needed new spark plugs

i went to go buy the ngk gp platinum

big mistake......

the engine would run like crap...

i cant pin point the problom

i just seemed it was not running right.

anyone else have had the same problom?
let me know

yes there brand new

 

i put the ngk oem bpr5ey the truck runs great now

Were the GP platinums too hot of plug? That can cause the pinging you were describing in the last thread.

Just goes to show you, stock can be hard to beat. Turns out the Toyota engineers weren't so stupid after all!

Well, that's not it then. I thought maybe a parts guy had grabbed the wrong ones by chance. Out of curiosity, do you know what your compression is?

I'd guess its ok since you said its running well now with the correct plugs

 

I was just curious if he maybe had slightly higher than normal compression. I would like to know why the different plugs would cause pinging, even though they were the right heat. Were they causing pre-ignition, or just what? Anyway, it doesn't really matter since the problem is fixed.

 

I run Bosch Platinum II's with no problems at all.
Just saying.

problem that i've seen with any pre obd2 motors and platinum plugs is that they foul easy and make a hotter spark even though the heat range is the same. stick with what the motor calls for.

 

Absolutely right. Your plugs are not the problem. I run the NGk Platinums and could not be more happy with them. The heat is almost the same as stock specs.

You have other issues going on. I would look at your cap and rotor. For your cap and rotor I would only go with stock OEM parts.

 

yeah i run platinums... no problems

 

rotor button, distributor cap, or crossed plug wires would be my guess. i'm also running ngk platinum's with no issues.
