It would help if we knew what motor you're talking about. If it's a 22R(E), check the cam chain guides. If it's broke, it will allow the timing chain a little more slack, which can change your cam timing. If the cam is a little out of time, than so is your ignition timing, and that can cause some pinging.

My truck used to do this with the old motor. When it finally went, I found the chain guide in about 4 or 5 pieces, and I think that was the main contributor to the pinging.

It can also be caused by excessive compression, which is quite rare. This requires a lot of carbon build up to achieve too much compression on accident. Also, any high spots inside the combustion chamber can act like glow plugs, causing pre-ignition detonation, which is similar. High spots can be caused by carbon deposits, or metal tabs, like a metal filing. Again, the likelyhood of this being the problem is very low.

If the motor is the 3.0, I don't know what to recommend besides checking the ignition timing.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Whoa, that's weird. I could of sworn when I typed my reply, there was only the original post.

Well, if the spark plugs don't get rid of the pinging, make sure to check ignition timing, and if necessary, check compression.

Run a little seafoam through the engine to clean out any carbon build up that might be in the cylinders, and see if that helps.

fouled air and fuel filter was causing this in Oregon when I was back there a few years back with my 95 Runner with 22Re.

mad props to the Yota dealership in The Dalles Oregon for figuring it out and getting me back to running fine. We poured several bottles of Techron fuel system cleaner through it as well and they suggested I had picked up a bad load of gas along the way also.
