it sounds like you need to find a mount for the alt. that you want to use. i swapped a 82 22r in place of a 86 22r and all the mounts worked on the 82.

is alt. wired for the 85 ? if it is i think the 85 alt. is internally regulated. unless there is a mid year change over. you could look into a gm 1 wire alt. change over. you might do a search on the conversion on yt.

You can go to wattora northwest toys, they have a article on how to use an alt. and wires off a s-10. The gm alt. has a higher output. I don't know how to do a link to the site, maybe someone else can do it for you. The gm 1 wire would probley be the easiest. Is the wiring in the truck for the 85 or the 84 alt. ? There are some links on yt to factory service manuals that would have wiring diagrams.

You should be able to match the wires on the plug to the wires in the harness. You might have to unwrap the wires going to the alt., if they are still in the harness. You can work your way back untill you find good wiring.
