My power rear windows keeps freezing at about 3/4 down. In order to get it up again I have to shake it or bang on it. Anyone know what could be holding it up? As soon as I take the cover off and have a look at the wires and linkage it works

 

My problem I used to have might be similar...it would stop about 3 inches down. Just grriiiiiiindd....stop. Switch would click and all, and it would struggle back up to close. I was sure it was just dirt in the tracks/or somehow the tracks got bent or super rusty. Finally had a guy who knew more than I did fix it by, well, bending the tracks up and greasing it some more. If taking the cover off "makes" it work then the cover itself must be in the way of something. No magic involved.
Wait...are you talking about your rear passenger doors or your tailgate window? What do you drive? I'm talking about my tailgate window on my 1992.

You mean the back cargo window or the back passenger windows or ? You say "windows" so more than one or just the one or ?

It sounds like a sensor to me if you are talking a 4Runner cargo window.

Ya it's the cargo window, I'm wondering if it's something with the locking mechanism because I had to manually undo it in order to get the tailgate down.

 

My tailgate does the same thing, and i usually have to help my window up the last two or three inches, I just figured it was tired??

 

I have a 92 Hilux Surf and have the same problem. My rear passenger windows aand tailgate window need a hand to help them up n down but motors seem fine.

 

Take it appart make sure nothing is in the way and greese the heck out of it.

Pretty common on those 2nd Gens (At least the ones I have had) Give it a hand and yes grease it. And lastly the door lock seemed to have something to do with ours...

 

I was told as they wear out,they get hot and slow down as it nears the top.I pulled my panel the other day and found the motor case was rusted all the way thru.I dont know how it still works.I ordered a rebuilt motor off ebay from a shop in FLA. for $49.00

 

Spray silicone or wd-40 into the rubber seal around the window these get old and sticky found it works for me also helps on power windows, my 4runner window would not go down, sprayed lube into the seal and "unstuck" it and it works perfectly

 

I lucked out , all I had to do was clean the switch in the center console. now my window works fine.

 

Took another look at things today because the window was driving me crazy. I started pulling apart all the electrical plugs seeing if one of the sensors was acting up. When I went to unplug this connection that had 6 or so wires in it the plug was not properly connected. Turns out it was making connection most of the time but would somehow pull apart enough when the window got almost all the way down.

 

Thanks guys. Cleaning and greasing it up helped it work better. I ended up finding a bit of rust startin on the linkage so I'll have to replace it before I can expect it to work perfect I guess.

 

I've been having some probs with my cargo window as well.
I trouble shot it down to a small plastic cog in the gear box that is stripped.

I found a few rebuilt ones on ebay. This one is the most expensive the rest are around $40..

a zillion different ways to bugger up that dang back window.

i've had the harness for it get loose, and would occasionally get caught on the mechanism as it was going down. only once every dozen or so. that was annoying.

so make sure your harnesses are all tied back from the moving parts of the regulator.

of course grease the heck out of it, make sure all the teeth are there.

and occasionally soak down the rubber seals with armor all. i do this to all my window seals to keep the glass from pulling the seals out of the door frames.

in fact, once a month, you can mist down every rubber and plastic thing on the truck. just a fine mist to soak in and rehydrate, no wipe. brings every thing back to life. windows work better, etc. UV kills 80s plastics.
