Front Axle popped out of Differential

Front Axle popped out of Differential
I got a 91 pickup and during some rain I tried moving it around in some light mud. I kept getting a back wheel spinning, so I put it in 4wd. It did not seem to make a difference. I thought maybe the hubs weren't locking or something.
After more inspecting I found that the passenger side axle shaft is not ingaged in the differential. I don't know how long this has been driven this way.
My question is how are these held in place? Since they have the bolt on CV shafts I would think that it was held in with more then a snap clip. Can I just push it back in and good to go, or do I need to take the differential apart and put some retainer back in place?
I figure I will need to eventually replace the bearings and stuff since I don't know if the previous owner got water in the diff, and don't know if all the oil has leaked out.
Do they make lockers for the IFS? What LSD fit the back axle?
I did try to search, but did not know what to search for. So, I didn't get any answers that were even close.

you can see the studs on the diff, and kinda see the housing of the cv joint.. mind you this pic my cv joint is done..

They do make lockers for ifs, but its aftermarket 7.5" lockers. I think you can retrofit a celica lsd to your rear diff, or do the elocker mod.

Thanks for the reply. On mine the flange with the bolts (on Passenger side) is pulled out of the differential. The bolts are all still done up to the CV joint. I can take a picture tonight.
I have an 87 Supra LSD rear end, would that work, or does it have to be out of a solid axle? My wife is tire of spinning one wheel when she tries to go. I don't know what an elocker is. I will have to search.

So here is what I was referring to. Notice how the axle is sticking out of the differential. It was more then that before I pushed on it. I could not get it to come back out farther.

It took me a little bit to find the fill plug, it was covered with mud and grease.
You have to take the front skid plate off to get to it.
Remove:

Then the fill plug is on the front diff cover:

Now I have 4WD. But, When I tried to spin the tires on gravel in 4 high the clutch slipped. I guess I know what my next project will be.
I also have to track down some oil leaks. But, I got the truck for free so I cannot complain. Oh, in the fill plug picture you can see the new steering bar the was replace as a recall item. I also got a free alignment and wash with it. That was a good deal.

That is exactly what mine looked like before I pushed it in by hand. Not as dirty though.
I had to take the wheel off and use a long tube and big hammer to get it back in. Works good now. Thanks for the reply.
That is also exactly what I was looking for. I just happen to have an 87 Supra Turbo rear LSD sitting in the shop. Now I know it will fit and have a resource for the install.
I wanted a LSD on the back instead of a locker, that way there is always more grip in the back. And it is useable on the road.
Thanks everyone for the great replies.
