Help!! 02 4Runner transmission Woes after drain/refill

Hi All,

Last weekend I do a transmission drain/refill on my Transmission (A340F) and after that, when the transmission is warm/hot, and the car is stationary, When I put the gear into R/D/2/L (automatic), I can hear a low "woes/click" sound on and off, may be 1 per second.

I'd check the fluid level and it seems like normal.

All I did is drain the old oil, refill it with 4.7Q totota ATF. The car seem fine when it first start up, but after ~10 miles drive, and it start to hear the noise.

Any one have any ideas??

Should I take the pan off and replace the filter, drain the TQ also (which I didn't do).

Thanks

You can't just drain the torque converter without removing it AFAIK. It just needs to be flushed to get the fluid out of there. Read your manual for ATF type and look at the drain plug for "DII or DIII" because my A340F tranny calls for dexron II or higher - definitely NOT Toyota T-IV!!. The Toyota fluid in there could very well be your problem and IMO probably is. I personally wouldn't drive it much or at all until you get the right fluid in there. Also, did you measure the amount you drained before you re-filled it to make sure you didn't over or under fill?

According to this guy in 2002 the Toyota spec was T-IV: https://www.yotatech.com/50405868-post4.html

Hi brian2sun,

Thanks for the reply, I think I'm using the correct ATF (DII/DIII from toyota, not the T-IV type). I didn't flush the TQ or drop the pan for the transmission filter, just to drain and refill the fluid.

And I'm so stupid this time to forget measuring the fluid I drained, so I just do the cold/hot engine run test to fill with the correct level.

One thing I should mention is the fluid come out is pretty bad in color, no particle, but seem to be thin (break down pretty bad).

Do you think the clogged filter with new ATF (thicker) will cause this problem??

According to the Owner's manual and the WS manual.
Pls notes the drain/refill volumn (1.6/2.1Q) doesn't seem right

Item Capacity Classification
Automatic transmission fluid
A340E:
Dry fill: 7.2 liters (7.6 US qts, 6.3 Imp.qts)
Drain and refill: 1.6 liters (1.7 US qts, 1.4 Imp.qts)

A340F:
Dry fill: 10.2 liters (10.8 US qts, 9.0 Imp.qts)
Drain and refill: 2.0 liters (2.1 US qts, 1.8 Imp.qts)

ATF D-II or DEXRON®III (DEXRON®II)

I didn't want to tell him to definitely use Dexron because I'm not 100% sure what his calls for so that's why I said to read the manual and look at the drain plug. I remember you saying in another thread that T-IV is (or might be) spec for '02s and you always give very good advice so I don't doubt you. It just seems like if all he did was drain and fill, it's gotta be the fluid causing the problem - either the type or the level.

I guess it could be coincedence or maybe something got lodged in a valve or something, but fluid seems more likely to me.

Not really know on the history.. we are the first owner, but my wife took it to the dealer for the first 60K since we bought the services package. Than afterward I take the responsibility for the tune up. I wasn't sure does it ever get done before.

Now is 97K and I figure out it might be a good time to do the drain/refill. So it is the first time I personally drain/refill the transmission.

Yes, it's a well-known typo. 4-5 qts. is about average. I think it has to do with the angle that these trannies are mounted on tacos as opposed to 4runners because I have a taco buddy who only got about 2.5 outta his A340F. I get over 5 outta mine.

Are you getting any CEL codes? They might provide a clue into the clicking.

If your fluid is that dark, you may want to do a full tranny flush as well. That way you know all the fluid is good.

I "eased" in my flush by doing a couple 4.5qt drain+fills spread over several weeks, then did the full flush last weekend along w/ drop pan+clean filter.

If your talking '02 4Runners it's definitely not T-IV. It's Dexron II or III (this is not a guess...the manual states to use either II or III).

Awe balls! I just did a drain/fill over the weekend with T-IV. I walked up to the toyota parts counter told the guy i wanted transmission fluid, he asked for year & model, typed something into the computer and sold me some t-iv.

Maybe T-IV is a replacement for Dexron II and III. Pretty sure D/M and VI are, but don't know about T-IV. Might be worth going back and asking some questions. Tell 'em you want a free flush if they screwed up Just to be clear I was just saying what the owner's manual states, not that T-IV can't be used.

Just check the ATF bottle, it is 00718-ATF00(for my A340F), so I guess the problem is not related to the Fluid.....

Also check the fluid level again, and it seems like ok,it is right in the middle of the 2 "HOT" mark after a 10 Miles drive...

I'm out of ideas

Just to be sure, you're checking it with the engine running and in "P" right?

Kerby J, all the later Dexrons are backwards compatible so you're good. I think they're up to D6 now.

Yes, coming home from work ~10 mile drive,
and P->R->N->D->2->L->2->D->N->R->P for 5-10 sec
Then pull out the dipstick and check it.
