Ok, so I know what some off yall are thinkin.. "Why?!" and my answer.. I dunno, why not? I found these Maxxis Bighorns locally through a craislist ad and decided to check them out. The guy said they had about 50% left but when I looked at them I knew they had more, which is why I got them.. $125, not bad. I'll have to run some spacers to fit them without rubbing (to fit the wheels too cus the centers are too small) and I also plan on pounding down the pinch weld as well as doing some inner fender work. I only plan on running these tires for a few months till I can afford some new 285s. I just got tired of waiting around and not finding any used 285's. The fender work wont be a total waste cus it's a benefit regardless of the any tire size. I just ordered some 1.25" All-Pro lug centric spacers and with a friendly TTORA member discount I was able to get the E/T lug nuts and shipping for free. So for $69.00 for the pair, not bad either. I know some people are skeptical about running spacers but I have read and learned that if they are installed correctly with loctite, torqued to the right setting, and checked every so often there is nothing wrong with running them. All in all I look forward to seeing this install. Maybe if I don't have any problems with them rubbing I'll run them a little longer but I plan on some Mickey Thomson ATZ's after summer. It's gonna be a tight fit. I wont be offroading much cus flex is limited with these big suckers. I'm also going to look into finding some 16" steelies and get some strictly offroad tires so I can swap out for trail events. Let me know what you guys think, suggestions are welcome! By the way, tires are 8 ply thank god and in standard they are bout a 34x12. Pics aren't completely centered and tires are as good centered as I could get them cus of a slight slope but this is a good idea of what they'll look like..

EDIT: I do have one question. I got to thinkin with the wheel centers being small they wont font the rears either without a spacer. Does anyone know how much I'll need to clear the rear? It's gotta be either a 1/4" or a 1/2"

Those tires look like they have lots of life left! They look like a great deal! I'm running Bighorns but mine are 285's. I'm not sure about going that big though.....without more lift. I've seen 305's on some rigs, but I would say you'd need a couple of more inches, by way of a body lift to clear those......but I'm no expert. I hope your happy with the results, and make sure you keep us posted!

 

I'd agree with fightman80 on this running 305/70/16 is no big deal just toss some wheel spacers up front and you are good to go. But as you know those 305/17 are huge. I'm pretty sure your just running 2.5" of lift if im correct and if that's the case you will either have to cut a bunch or you will for sure need at least 1" of body lift and even then you will still have to trim fender. Also consider tranny cooler and possibly power steering cooler too. Hope this helps a little!

 

I ran 305/70R16s before w/ a 2.5" lift and they were still too wide to tuck into the fenders even without wheel spacers on stock wheels. The body would just sit on the tires and they would grind. Seeing as the R17s are even taller and just as wide, it's really going to depend on the backspacing of those wheels. Stock is ~ 4.65" so I'd guess you'd need ~3.5-3.75" BSing to tuck them. And I have SR5 flares, I'm guessing the Limited's may be harder to clear. The front will rub unless you pound and cut a lot.

 

Thanks guys for the info and that link is great. Like I said I only plan to run these things for a few months so I'm only gonna do what I need to to get these to drive well. The rims are 17x8 with 4.5 backspacing. I'm not too worried about them stickin out cus I most likely wont be wheeling much until I get new tires. Summer is when I ditch the truck to ride and use the 4wheeler anyways If I absolutely can't get these tires to work well I'll sale them, maybe for a profit, and find some used 285s. Well, depending when I get my front spacers I would like to mount a the front tirea and check for rub at full turn. I stuck an ad up on CL for trading for 285/70-17 or buy and I've gotten all sorts of questions already. Might be trading for some dynapro mt's. I've gotten offers for trade for dynapro m/t, bfg a/t, open country a/t, and nitto a/t so far. Were these people freakin HIDING before? I'll keep yall posted.

dude thats scary, so the wheel wont even be sitting on the hub? thats gonna put a ton of strain on those lugs. the weight of the whole car will be sitting on just the lugs instead of the wheels
