82 fj60 diesel wont run

I finally achieved zen,,,, scooped up my first cruiser, an fj60 diesel that had sat for 9months, it will start easy but dies right away, what steps should I take to troubleshoot this. I am thinking fuel filter or something but not sure as have only had gas engines.

Bleed the air out of the fuel lines.

And/or air may be getting into the fuel lines if something is wrong with the injector pump.

that may also have a mechanical pump. make sure that it is good. it may not be making enough flow to keep it running

change out fuel filters, drain the water from your fuel water seperator... if you have one on your rigg..

like they said before bleed all the air out of fuel system..

change out glow plugs.

do a tune up.

pop test the injectors, get the fuel pump calibrated

edic thingymado... I can't remember what it does but it tends to fail and won't run without it. Start circuit bypasses it so it will start but not run. You can bypass it I think.

Glow plugs will be fine if it starts but not run.

I would try and start it and hold the thottle open a good ways and up to WOT. If its been sitting for 9months it may just need a few good WOT's to clean it out. Simple suggestion

You will find with a diesel, that your fuel injector pump controls everything. Especially if it's a mechanical pump which is probably what yours is.

In many mechanical pump diesels, that fuel pump controls not only the fuel delievery, the rate, but even the combustion timing. You may consider buying a service manual and the factory tools to set the injector pump timing.

Also be CAREFUL. Those pumps spray diesel at very high compression......like a power washer you might use on concrete. It can spray diesel INTO your skin.

After that, run a half quart of ATF in your fuel tank to keep the injector pump lubricated now that the govt took the sulphur out of our fuel.

I just got back into town and I got a new fuel filter, some diesel treat and a bit of a plan. I am gonna rule out the oil pressure thing tomorrow and get some clean fuel going. I have Ellerys Landcruiser diesel book coming, I think I have some electrical issues as well. I must thank everyone again for the help and hopefully we will have a running cruiser shortly......I will keep ya posted

Whats the electrical issues? The switch behind the key tumbler could be an issue, they wear out especially with a big wad of keys hanging from the ignition. If the "on" function isn't working it won't power the Edic to keep it running but it will get power in the "start" position. Could be the source of other issues. Keep us posted.

thats prolly the problem as the suker will run with it in start,,,hahaha if that fixes it I am gonna be some happy.....the electrical issues involve no power to anything inside ie heater fan, dash lights n gauges etc, checked all the fuses and guys before me been messin as my glow plug switch is wired hillbilly style among other things. i will check the switch,,,mean time my oil sending unit crumbled to powder if its the one with the cover over a little thermostat lookin deal.

I'm not sure where the oil pressure sender is, probably somewhere close to the oil filter. I'm not highly experienced with 3Bs. Sounds like the keyed "on" power issue to me. Could be the wiring though, don't rule that out. I had to replace my "switch" that goes behind the keyed part and it was $15 at the local parts store. Don't know if they are similar though.

Happy to help and hope its an easy fix.

I checked the switch with a meter and appears to work, but I messed up something else as now the starter wont fire either. Doesnt even click,,checked the switch again for the starter 12v and its still there,, checked battery posts, fusable links and another fuse under the hood.everythings all rusty and salty around the fuse box, must be wiring problem. the oil sending units next to the oil filter and next to it "the thermostat deal" is most likely a water temp sensor. truck ran with starter on so its maybe the power issue to the edic or oil pressure? ran outta time tonight and i gotta work tomorrow. hopefully the book has some electrical info.
