Unhappy Shifting into 4wheel low grinds

Well first let me just say how much I've enjoyed reading the forms from Yotatech for the past few months. You guys have had some very useful ideas, like the deckplate and ISR mod. I have done both and love it.

Anyway here's my problem, I have a 97 4-runner limited, I can shift into 4wd high with no problems. The problem is when I try to put it into 4wd low. I put the transmission into neutral, then try to move the 4wd lever into 4wd low, but it grinds. And by grinds I mean I can feel it in the shifter and hear it too. It sounds like gears grinding. I used to have no problem getting into and out of 4wd low. Right now the only way I can get it in or out is to put the 4wd into neutral and then put the transmission in park then back to neutral then I can move it with no grinding, sometimes. Sometimes it takes a few tries. Any ideas? Thanks for any input you might have.

Don't you need to be stopped (not moving - stationary) to get in and out of 4lo?

Just wondering.

Yeah you need to be stopped. I've always come to a complete stop. It's almost like the transmission is still turning though or something. It's kinda got me freaked out a bit, I don't like my truck to make grinding noises.

Even after you come to a stop, wait a few seconds to make sure everything is truly at rest before trying to shift. If I let my truck idle for a few seconds before I shift, I have no problem.
